The Smokey Joe is a good high heat short cook grill, Burgers, Brats, wings, steak even. There's simply no way to add briquettes etc without tearing it down. Probably need to look at upgrading and if you like the Weber line they make large kettle smokers that should give you success.

Hey All, I just got a new Weber Smoky Joe off of Craigslist to take camping. The only charcoal "grill" I've ever used has been my LBGE, though. I'm just planning on steaks and burgers for the weekend.

I got the weber performer, weber gasser and a traeger all lined up for convenience. The best barbecue comes off the performer but is the most work when you're chasing little kids. That looks great! I'll use our Smokey Joe when we go camping and use our 22" at home.

But sometimes I think I should break out the Joe when grilling smaller quantities. I'm thinking of buying a Weber Smokey Joe charcoal 14" inch but it has no thermometer. I'd like to smoke briskets and other food on it and I'd like to know the ambient temperature of the inside of the Weber.
What do you guys recommend as an affordable option for temperature monitoring?
