While tile is generally a perfect base due to its hardness and lack of movement, the integrity of that tile is paramount. The tile surface cannot be cracked, hollow, or prone to cracking under pressure. If the tile was installed over a plywood underlayment specifically for sound reduction, that underlayment must be securely fastened and in good condition. An uneven or compromised subfloor will translate directly to an uneven laminate floor, resulting in gaps, popped planks, and an uncomfortable walking surface.
The Essential Role of Underlayment
Skipping underlayment is a mistake when laying laminate over tile, even if the tile seems perfect. Underlayment serves several vital functions in this specific application. First, it provides a slight cushioning effect that helps absorb the impact of footsteps, reducing the noise level significantly compared to a direct, hard tile-to-laminate connection. Second, it acts as a moisture barrier, protecting the laminate core from any potential vapor that might arise from the concrete or tile below. Finally, it helps to smooth out minor imperfections in the tile surface, ensuring a flawlessly flat platform for the click-together flooring system.

The Preparation and Installation Process

The tile surface must be meticulously cleaned to remove any dirt, grease, or residue that could prevent the laminate from adhering correctly or create weak points. Following cleaning, the surface should be tested for levelness using a straightedge or level; any tile that sits proud of the others must be ground down or sanded flush. Once the surface is prepped, you can begin laying the laminate planks. It is recommended to start along the longest, straightest wall, applying a thin bead of construction adhesive along the edge of each plank where it meets the wall to prevent shifting and create a more permanent bond, although some floating installations may not require adhesive.
Addressing Grout Lines and Edges
