Success, however, depends entirely on proper preparation and the right materials; simply nailing planks straight into concrete will lead to disaster. The most critical factor to address before any installation begins is the concrete itself. You must ensure the surface is structurally sound, completely dry, and free from any contaminants. Assessing the Concrete Surface
Before you purchase materials, conduct a thorough inspection of the wall. Stand back and look for unevenness, as significant deviations will be exaggerated once the planks are installed. Run a level and straightedge across the surface to identify high and low spots. Small imperfections can be filled, but large dips or bumps might require a skim coat of mortar or a self-leveling compound. A flat substrate ensures a professional finish and prevents stress on the fasteners that secure your wood.

Equally important is the selection of the attachment method. You cannot simply screw wood directly into concrete; you need a stable intermediary. The standard practice is to install vertical wood furring strips or a metal stud framing system. These strips create a 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch gap between the concrete and the back of the wood planks. This gap is essential because it allows for minor wall irregularities and provides necessary expansion space for the wood, preventing pressure build-up that leads to cracking.

Cut the furring strips to length and secure them to the concrete using the powder-actuated nailer and concrete anchors. The strips should run vertically for a plank-style installation, as this hiding the horizontal joints creates a cleaner look.
As you attach the strips, constantly check for level and plumb. If one strip is crooked, every plank you install afterward will inherit that error. It is better to adjust the placement of the strip or shim it slightly than to proceed with a framework that is out of alignment. Laying the Planks
Start the installation at the focal point of the wall, such as directly above a fireplace or centered on the main wall. Apply a generous bead of construction adhesive to the back of the first plank.
