Comics has developed specialized terminology. Several attempts have been made to formalize and define the terminology of comics by authors such as Will Eisner, Scott McCloud, R. C.

Harvey and Dylan Horrocks. Much of the terminology in English is under dispute, so this page will list and describe the most common terms used in comics. Here is a glossary of comic book terms, that are regularly used in comic book media and discussion, to help those new to comics.

According to McCloud, cartooning tends toward generalization and helps identification. Recto/verso: technical terms for pages in a spread. Recto = right page, verso = left page Printer's spread: the layout of pages for printing.

Not the same as a spread in a printed book. Thumbnail: a rough sketch of a comic, delineating placement of figures, word balloons, and background elements, as well as content of word balloons.
