January 10, 1737] [a] - February 12, 1789) was an American farmer, writer, military officer and politician. He is best known as one of the founders of Vermont and for the capture of Fort Ticonderoga during the American Revolutionary War, and was also the brother of Ira Allen and the father of Fanny Allen. Ethan Allen was a soldier and frontiersman, leader of the Green Mountain Boys during the American Revolution.

After fighting in the French and Indian War (1754-63), Allen settled in what is now Vermont. At the outbreak of the American Revolution, he raised his force of Green Mountain Boys. Ethan Allen led the Green Mountain Boys to capture Fort Ticonderoga during the American Revolutionary War.
