Beautiful appaloosas come in an almost endless variety of spotting patterns, but can be categorized into several types based on the amount of white in the coat. Appaloosa coat patterns are often characterized by a base coat color with overlay patterns, such as spots, blanket or snowflake patterns. Some key visual cues to recognize these patterns include the presence of dark spots over a lighter base coat, mottled skin around the eyes, muzzle, and genitalia, as well as sclera and striped hooves.

Appaloosa White Spots (Snowflake) Appaloosa white spots - which only show up against a darker background - may be caused by the dominant Sn S allele. It is, however, also possible that they are due to an alternative allele of the Ap gene. The white spots are small and roundish, and may merge together in some areas to create a lacy pattern.

The snowflake is usually born soild coloured and 'colours out' to this pattern, often becoming roan.
