Understanding Forest Service International

Established in 1991, FSI has its roots in the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), also known as the Earth Summit. It was founded to address the urgent need for coordinated, international efforts to protect and sustainably use the world's forests. Today, FSI is headquartered in Bonn, Germany, and works closely with various UN bodies, governments, civil society organizations, and private sector entities.

FSI's Core Programs and Initiatives

  • Forest Landscape Restoration (FLR): FSI supports the global FLR initiative, aiming to restore 350 million hectares of degraded landscapes by 2030. This involves promoting sustainable land-use practices, enhancing ecosystem services, and improving the livelihoods of local communities.
  • Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+): FSI works to develop and implement REDD+ projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions from deforestation and forest degradation. It also advocates for the recognition of forests as a vital carbon sink and promotes the inclusion of forestry in national climate change policies.
  • Forest Governance and Markets: FSI strengthens forest governance by promoting transparent and inclusive decision-making processes, enhancing the capacity of local institutions, and supporting the development of responsible forestry markets.

FSI's Global Impact

Over the past three decades, FSI has implemented numerous projects and initiatives across Africa, Asia, Latin America, and Europe. Its work has resulted in the restoration of millions of hectares of degraded forests, the protection of critical habitats, and the enhancement of the livelihoods of countless communities. FSI's impact is not limited to on-the-ground interventions; it also influences global forest policy and drives international cooperation through its advocacy and capacity-building efforts.

Partnerships and Collaboration

FSI's success is built on strong partnerships and collaboration with a wide range of stakeholders. It works closely with governments to develop and implement national forest policies, engages with civil society organizations to amplify the voices of local communities, and partners with the private sector to promote responsible forestry practices and sustainable supply chains. FSI is also a founding member of the Collaborative Partnership on Forests (CPF), a unique platform that brings together 14 international organizations to coordinate and support global forest initiatives.
