The BMW K1 is a motorcycle manufactured by BMW, introduced in 1988. Although expensive and either loved or hated, [1] the short production run created the result that the motorcycling press [citation needed] and public [2] never had the same view of BMW motorcycles again. Well, BMW crippled the 987cc K1 with 100 horsepower at a time when the Suzuki GSX-R1100 made 125, the Honda CBR1000F made 132, the Yamaha FZR1000 made 145, and the Kawasaki Ninja ZX-11 made 147.

Why was BMW the K1 so weak? At the time, there was a voluntary 100 horsepower limit for motorcycles sold in several European countries, including Germany. More a "gentleman's express" than a sharp-edged sport bike, the K1 was a landmark in BMW's evolution beyond the traditional boxer engine. The BMW K1 was a fully-faired sport touring motorcycle produced by BMW from 1988 to replace the BMW K100 and manufactured until 1993.

From 1988 to 1993, the maker manufactured over 6,900 units. The k1 was launched at the IFMA exhibition in Cologne/ Germany and introduced to the public the 20th Sep 1988. According to the BMW press release in 1989 the k1 was the brand new 4-valve top model of the K-series after a 100.000 of the well-known "flying brick" 2.

The BMW K1 generated some controversial discussions in 1988 without any parallel in BMW's past. Apart from numerous technical highlights, the trigger for this heated debate was the aerodynamically refined "body" ("Karosserie") concept with the motorcycle faired almost entirely from the front wheel to the tail with a pillion seat cover and a design that permitted a uniquely low drag coefficient. When BMW introduced the radical sport-touring 4-cylinder BMW K1 in 1988, the Bavarian firm was already under attack from BMW traditionalists.
