530i is a honda accord compared to the 540i in a reliability ranking. After dealing with watercooled alternators, valley pan gaskets buried under intake manifolds, oil leaks that were unrepairable, and timing chain/guides issues, No Way In Heck would I buy a v8 BMW unless it was a dream machine. Drive a 530 and see if you like it.

The 540i runs 0-60 anywhere from 5.4 to 5.7 seconds (according to magazine tests), and I believe I read that the 530i gets the 0. After owning a E38 7 series with an m62 I decided to personally go with a e39 530i/5 instead of a e39 540i/6 when I purchased mine back in 2012. In my opinion its all about preference and budget.
