Is there a bathroom above this one, or kitchen? Depending on the severity of the water damage, this could cause serious structural issues; the bacteria that mold feeds on can literally start to eat through/rot your studs/beams, and potentially cause structural failure and collapse of the ceiling.

I've heard vinegar/borax/water solution can reduce mold coming back if you clean your ceiling with it and leave some of the solution there. I haven't noticed additional mold since using this but I also haven't lived in my shitty bathroom for too long. Get a specific mold killing product, leave the powered vent on for twenty minutes after you shower.

May have to repaint the ceiling with a exterior paint. You can't stop mold because mold spores are everywhere. What you see in your bathroom won't make you sick.

Even if it does get moldy unless just pure negligence, you can wipe it off (if white ceiling paint you can use bleach). This is my go to for bathroom ceilings. Just to be clear you paint your whole bathroom with oil based primer.
