Cabinet Photograph Size

The cabinet card was a style of photograph that was widely used for photographic portraiture after 1870. It consisted of a thin photograph mounted on a card typically measuring 108 by 165 mm (by inches). The increased size of the cabinet also lead to more photographer experimentation with collage (cutting out multiple different photos and pasting them together in a new cabinet).

Cabinet photos continued to be popular up until the time around WWI. The cabinet card was basically a larger version of the carte de visite. Paper prints measuring about 5.5 x 4 inches were pasted to standard sized cardboard mounts measuring 6.5 x 4.25 inches.

They became especially popular for family portraits displayed in parlors. There are similar card-type photographs, such as the smaller carte-de-visits which was introduced in the 1850s, but if your old photo is about 4x6 in size then chances are it is a cabinet card.
