Quake palette The Quake palette. Color 255 is transparent for sprites, 2d lmps, and gfx.wad entries (excluding conchars, in which case it is black (color 0) that's made transparent). It is important that palette index 0 is black.

Quake color palette created by miverastsmidge9966_0 that consists #eaeadf,#eeeee5,#f2f2ec,#f7f7f2,#fbfbf9 colors. Inside quake_palette folder: There's a variety of Quake color palettes in different file formats, including aco and the original palette in a PNG file. The core ones within this repo are the ones for Gimp/Aseprite and Photoshop for quick access, while having some alternatives saved! Also the raw color values are in a doc.

Every row is a defined color, in this row are the shades of this color. This is smart system to easily create light and shadow effects. The palette is stored as an array of 256 x 3 bytes; 3 because RGB.

Took no effort actually. I found a collection of palette files for quake, which none of them were.gpl. Turns out that one of the palette files has a similar notation to.gpl files, so I changed it around a bit, and made that.gpl.

Thank god I didn't have to do that color by color. The DOOM and Quake indexed color palettes, respectively. Both palettes use 18bit of possible 24bit, with 6bit per RGB component as handled by most DAC's on PC video boards.

The DOOM palette (left) has 249 unique colors. the Quake palette (right) only 226 unique colors. Both use 16 color ramps and some 8 color ramps, and a couple of other colors.

This weird mess is the color palette that Quake uses! The original Quake engine could only display variations of these exact 256 colors due to hardware restraints, so while designing the textures for the player, the enemies, the items, the environment, and even the UI, ID Software had to make sure they only used these colors.
