Mark Rothko saw these paintings as objects of contemplation, demanding the viewer's complete absorption. In the late 1950s, Rothko was commissioned to paint a series of murals for the fashionable Four Seasons restaurant, in the Seagram Building on Park Avenue, New York. In this video, we take a closer look at the Rothko Room located at the Tate Modern, a space dedicated to the works of the renowned American abstract expressionist artist, Mark Rothko.

The Rothko Room at Tate Modern Seagram Murals Tate Modern houses all nine panels of Rothko's Seagram Murals, originally commissioned for the Four Seasons restaurant in New York. Although Rothko ultimately withdrew the commission, these dark and atmospheric works remained intact. Installed together in their own gallery at Tate Modern, these murals are presented in dimmed light to preserve.
