Washington Hand Press. Eight years following clymer's invention, fellow american samuel rust designed a somewhat simpler iron press which he called the washington hand press. Many manufacturers began offering the washington press in the decades that followed.

The washington press became, by far, the most popular iron hand press in america, a position it held from the 1820s until the end of the hand press era, in the middle of the century. To say presses were monstrously heavy contraptions is an understatement. On this day in 1821, samuel rust patented the washington hand press.
