I am trying to fit my new alloy pedals to my e39 M5 and I need some help removing the gas pedal as I cannot get to the back of of it to fit the nuts and washers on the screws. It seems to have a hinge at the top of the pedal and its this that gets in the way. It is very different to the e36 and e46 pedals.
I have done two pedal installs on the E39 M5. I found that the cleanest and easiest way to do a top notch install on the gas pedal is to order a new OEM one from BMW for $20, and install the new aftermarket pedal onto it off the car first. I think it might be possible to remove the pedal without damaging it, but it is tricky, and frustrating.

To remove the gas pedal, grab a dentist type mirror & look down at the floor behind the gas pedal. You'll see 2 tabs that need to be pulled down towards the front of the car, towards the floor. Once they are released, there are still little tabs holding the pedal in place. Try to find a wide "J" hook pry bar (wide as in around 2 inches wide) under the front of the pedal at the floor & pry up.
