The Bmw feels and sounds somewhat like a modern XKE (2/3 scale), which isn't a bad thing. The Boxster drives like a mid engine Porsche, which no other car does. It would be a tough choice although the z3 might win out on simplicity and ease of maintenance. I think the Boxster engine issues were relegated to the first couple years, 97-98. #6.
The z3 was made to be cheaper for BMW and more affordable in a good way. Porsche tried to push the stiffness and suspension way more IMO but not the engine for the box/caymans. IMO I would probably take a boxster, With PPI for Ims bearing, BORE SCORING, and rear main seal leak.
