Is the G11 740i / G30 540i reliable? I've been looking into getting a car with a B58 and I've considered the 340i 540i and X3 M40i. I've recently looked into the 740i/540i which also comes with a B58 and they're about the same price or only few grand more than the cars mentioned above.

740i should be more than good enough, it's got decent power and it's pretty smooth. You'll probably be alright without xDrive but in your climate I might recommend winter tires. They'll increase traction in snow quite a bit and more importantly they'll make a huge difference in stopping distances which no AWD system will help you with.
