Monitoring for monkeypox viral DNA in wastewater solids

The heatmaps and charts below display data from WastewaterSCAN’s monitoring for monkeypox viral DNA; the results shown include the northern California communities served by the Sewer Coronavirus Alert Network (SCAN) and the communities in California and across the US participating in WastewaterSCAN. Results from participating states and communities are shown in alphabetical order by state.

Detection of monkeypox virus DNA in wastewater solids indicates that there is at least one person in the community served by a wastewater treatment system who is infected with the virus and shedding its genetic material into wastewater. More research is underway to understand how the concentration of the DNA in wastewater solids relates to cases in the community. These estimates can be improved as more data becomes available about monkeypox cases in participating communities.
