After a long period of neglect and decay, following the demolition of the fountain, they were brought back into use in the 1770s as a. The 1.3 metre deep bath passed through a couple of different hands in the ensuing decades including Oxford Street draper Henry Glave and Rev William Pennington Bickford, the Rector of St Clement Danes, who, believing in the bath's Roman origins, hoped to turn them into a tourist attraction. Letocetum is the ancient remains of a Roman settlement.

It was an important military staging post and posting station near the junction of Watling Street, the Roman military road to north Wales, and Icknield (or Ryknild) Street (now the A38).
