Colonel John T. Thompson: The Father of the Tommy Gun
Colonel John T. Thompson is...
A pioneering figure in the American firearms industry, Colonel John T. Thompson is best known for his eponymous submachine gun. Developed in the early 1900s, the Thompson submachine gun, or Tommy gun, revolutionized modern warfare with its high rate of fire and practicality in Close Quarters Combat.
The Genesis of the Tommy Gun
The story of the Thompson submachine gun began in the early 1900s, when Colonel John T. Thompson, a former cavalry officer and later a wealthy businessman, became fascinated with the concept of a portable machine gun.
Thompson saw an opportunity to develop a handheld version of the Maxim machine gun, a heavier machine gun that could be mounted on a cart or tripod, but lighter and more versatile for military use.
Thompson enlisted the help of Theodore H. Eickhoff, a mechanical engineer, and Oscar V. Payne, a chemist and inventor, to bring his vision to life.

Development and Production
The development of the Thompson submachine gun was a long and arduous process. Thompson experimented with various prototypes and designs before arriving at the final product.
One of the key innovations of the Tommy gun was its use of a cyclic operation system, which allowed the gun to fire hundreds of rounds per minute without a significant increase in weight or size.
The first production models of the Thompson submachine gun were reportedly made in 1920 and were primarily marketed to law enforcement and military agencies.

Pioneer of Modern Firearms
Arguably, Colonel John T. Thompson pioneered the modern firearms industry with the development and marketing of the Tommy gun.
With its easily removable and replaceable magazines, the Thompson submachine gun was one of the first firearms to popularize the concept of magazine-fed semi-automatic firearms.
Similar to many modern submachine guns, the Thompson was designed to fire pistol cartridges – .45 ACP in its original design.
