The History of the Western Red Cedar as State Tree of Washington

The western red cedar has played a vital role in the ecosystem and daily life of the indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest, particularly the Tlingit, Haida, and Salish tribes. The tree's durability and resistance to rot and insects made it an ideal choice for craftsmen to create long-lasting houses, canoes, and tools. The cedar's aromatic wood also provided natural air freshening properties that helped mask odors in homes.
The western red cedar was included in the early American settlement of the Pacific Northwest and its versatility provided vital resources. After British explorer David Thompson introduced the tree to a wider audience in the early 19th century, the western red cedar gained popularity in horticulture, allowing for cultivation beyond its native range.

Physical Characteristics of the Western Red Cedar

The western red cedar grows as a large evergreen tree, often reaching heights of 100 feet. It develops a broad, rounded crown with multiple trunks, creating a complex leaf structure which allows for a five-needle, scale-like shape on the branches. Compared to other trees of similar size, the western red cedar generally has a relatively wide branch spacing. Bark sheds throughout its lifetime, becoming chipped and giving the tree an older, windowpane appearance. Leaves stay on the tree for approximately seven years before waving away.
