Starting college can feel like an exciting leap into a new world—new classes, new friends, and new responsibilities. But one of the biggest adjustments is managing your own money. Balancing tuition, textbooks, rent, and fun isn’t easy, especially if it’s your first time budgeting on your own.

Why Financial Independence Matters

Financial independence doesn’t just mean paying your own bills—it’s about making choices that work for you. When you’re in control of your money, you’re also in control of your future. That might mean being able to buy what you need for your dorm room without relying on a last-minute loan or having the confidence to explore new opportunities.

It also means knowing how to protect yourself financially, avoiding common student money traps. A little planning now can save you a lot of stress later.

Smart Moves for a New Semester

Here are some quick tips to build your financial independence this summer:

  • Track Your Spending: Even if you’re not a spreadsheet fan, a simple app can help you see where your money is going—and where you might cut back.
  • Build an Emergency Fund: Even a small cushion can save the day when your laptop crashes or you’re hit with an unexpected expense.
  • Use Credit Wisely: Building good credit now can open doors later, but only if you’re paying off your balance in full and on time.
  • Explore Student-Friendly Tools: Many credit unions offer checking accounts with no monthly fees, digital banking to keep things simple, and budgeting and educational resources that speak directly to your needs as a student.

Make This July Your Launchpad

Independence Day is about freedom and fresh starts. As you prepare to head back to campus, think about how you can make this semester your best one yet—by taking charge of your finances and laying the foundation for a confident, independent future.

Summer is here, and it’s the perfect time to create unforgettable memories with your family. But let’s be real: between ice cream stops and amusement parks, summer vacation costs can add up fast. The good news? With a little planning, saving for summer vacation can be simple and stress-free.

Here’s how to budget for the ultimate family getaway.

1. Set Your Summer Vacation Goals

Before you start packing those beach towels, think about what kind of trip fits your family’s style. Are you dreaming of a beach vacation, a national park adventure, or a fun-filled road trip? By setting clear goals, you can estimate your travel expenses and create a realistic summer vacation budget.

2. Start a Dedicated Vacation Fund

One of the best ways to save money for your family trip is to create a dedicated vacation fund. Open a separate savings account or set up a digital “Summer Vacation Fund” in your banking app. Even small automatic transfers each week can add up over time, helping you stay on track with your savings goals.

3. Find Budget-Friendly Deals

When it comes to planning a summer trip, there are plenty of ways to save:

  • Book flights and accommodations early to snag the best deals
  • Use travel apps to track price drops.
  • Once you’re at your destination, skip the pricey tourist spots and check out local events, free festivals, or hidden gems that won’t cost a fortune.

4. Get the Whole Family Involved

Saving for summer vacation can be a fun project for the whole family. Challenge the kids to come up with free activities for the trip or let them help with extra chores to earn spending money. This not only helps boost your vacation fund but also gets everyone excited about the adventure ahead.

5. Embrace Flexibility and Spontaneity

Sometimes, the best summer memories come from the simplest moments. Be open to changing plans and embracing spontaneous fun — whether that’s a backyard camping trip under the stars or a last-minute road trip to a new spot. The key is to focus on connection and laughter.

Final Tip for Saving for Summer Vacation

With these family-friendly tips for saving for summer vacation, you can focus on what really matters: making memories, relaxing in the sun, and soaking up every moment of joy.

Start building your summer vacation savings today, and let the adventures begin!

How do you build credit if you have no credit? How do you navigate financial institutions when all your experiences with them have been negative? For many people, including Vantage West member Greg B., these questions are a harsh reality and a tricky path to navigate alone.

“I’ve never trusted banks,” says Greg. “Growing up, my family always had bad experiences with banks. We didn’t have much money, and it seemed like the bank was hitting us with fees all the time. We also didn’t have a line of credit because we didn’t have money to pay anything off.”

These childhood experiences stuck with Greg, leaving him resentful of institutions that felt more harmful than helpful.

“I was like a caveman,” says Greg. “Hiding money around the house, sticking money under my bed.”

A Hard Lesson in Credit

When he needed to buy a car, he had to use his wife’s credit—which was low. The result? A sky-high interest rate that left them barely making a dent in the loan. Then, Greg was involved in an accident.

“By the graces of God, the car was totaled,” says Greg. While it sounds strange to call that a blessing, the accident gave Greg a fresh start.

Thanks to insurance, he was able to buy a new car. This time, the car was financed through Vantage West Credit Union thanks to a dealership partnership.

A New Beginning at Vantage West

Greg started visiting Vantage West’s Black Canyon branch (now 43rd and Peoria) to make his car payments. “When I walked into the branch, I would see signs for credit cards and mortgages,” says Greg. “It had been on my mind for a while to learn more about credit cards because I knew I would need credit if I ever wanted to buy property.”

One day, he finally gathered up the courage to ask relationship banker Jessie Mills about our credit cards.

“I’m gonna be honest, I was scared,” says Greg. “But Jessie was personable, made me feel valued, and took the time to explain the best way to build my credit without pushing a credit card on me. I appreciated having the information to make my own decision.”

And while he didn’t open a credit card that day, his interaction with Jessie stuck with him.

“After about a month or so I went back in there and told her ‘OK, let’s go,’” says Greg.

Building Credit, One Step at a Time

Jessie set him up with a credit card, but Greg was hesitant to use it at first. He would make a purchase and then immediately pay off the balance, causing the purchase to not be reported to the credit bureau.

He went back to Jessie, and together they built a plan to work on building credit over time.

“I started to leave a balance on the card and then pay it off on time,” says Greg “And I made sure to keep my balance within a reasonable credit limit.”

And his work began to pay off. Following Jessie’s guidance slowly and steadily, he built his credit until his score rose to over 800.

This achievement helped him to purchase a car at a reasonable rate for his wife, and recently he was even able to drive a new car off the lot for himself as well.

“Jessie’s help really touched my heart,” says Greg. “She helped me because she cared and wanted to help me. In a world where it feels like everyone is trying to pull a penny from you, I’m so appreciative for my experience with Jessie and Vantage West.”

Advice for Others on the Same Road

With a strong credit score in his back pocket, Greg has his eyes set on achieving a few more goals.

“I hope to one day own a property and have a house of my own,” says Greg. “My mom still lives in the projects in Phoenix, and I’d love to move her out of there and take care of her.”

Looking back on his experience, Greg offers this advice to those wary of financial institutions and credit like he was: “I don’t care how old you are, you need to start building some kind of credit. Otherwise, you’ll end up with outrageous interest rates like the ones I had on some of my early car purchases.”

“And when you visit 43rd and Peoria, ask for Jessie and tell her that Gregory says, ‘Thanks.’”

Small businesses are built on passion, grit, and a little bit of luck. But long-term success isn’t just about a great idea—it’s about having a solid financial foundation. This Small Business Month, take a moment to reassess your financial strategy and ensure sustainable growth.

1. Master Your Cash Flow

Cash flow is the lifeblood of any business, yet many entrepreneurs struggle with balancing income and expenses. A common pitfall? Focusing only on revenue without accounting for payment delays or unexpected costs.

Pro tip: A dedicated business checking account with digital tools can help track funds in real time, allowing for smarter financial decisions.

2. Use Credit Strategically

Many business owners hesitate to take on financing, but when used wisely, credit can be a powerful tool for growth. A business loan is ideal for major investments like equipment or expansion.

3. Make Your Money Work for You

A smart savings strategy isn’t just for individuals—businesses can also benefit from putting excess funds to work.

Setting aside revenue in a business savings account creates a financial cushion while earning interest. Some business owners even use high-yield savings accounts or certificates to prepare for future expansion.

4. Streamline Payments & Operations

Businesses using outdated systems for invoicing or payment collection may struggle with cash flow and customer experience. Modern merchant services allow businesses to accept multiple forms of payment seamlessly, helping revenue flow smoothly

5. Build a Relationship with Your Financial Institution

Your financial institution should be more than just a place to deposit funds—it should be a resource that understands your challenges.

At Vantage West Credit Union, we invest in the success of local businesses because we’re part of the same community. From tailored financing solutions to expert guidance, we help business owners navigate financial decisions with confidence.

In a world where cyberattacks make headlines almost daily, it’s easy for small business owners to feel overwhelmed. But here’s the truth: most breaches don’t happen because hackers are clever geniuses—they happen because someone left the digital equivalent of the front door wide open.

Cybersecurity isn’t just about buying fancy software. It’s about daily habits. Just like brushing your teeth prevents cavities, good cyber hygiene prevents most attacks. And the best part? It’s not rocket science.

Here are five simple, repeatable practices you can start embedding into your business today.

1. Keep Your Software—and Systems—Updated

Outdated software is a goldmine for attackers. If your systems are missing security patches, you’re walking around with a “hack me” sign on your back.

What to do:

  • Turn on automatic updates for all devices and applications.
  • Regularly update business-critical tools—email, accounting software, CRM, etc.
  • Assign someone to check for unsupported software (like Windows 7 or old routers).
  • Pro tip: Don’t forget about firmware—network gear and printers need updates too.

2. Use a Password Manager and Kill the “One Password Fits All” Habit

Reusing passwords across accounts is like having one key for your house, car, and office. If it’s stolen once, everything’s compromised.

What to do:

  • Use a password manager (like Bitwarden, 1Password, or even browser-based ones for starters).
  • Generate unique passwords for every account.
  • Turn on multi-factor authentication (MFA) wherever available—it’s your second line of defense.
  • Bonus: A password manager also protects against phishing by not autofilling on fake sites.

3. Back Up Your Data—And Test It

Ransomware thrives on poor backup hygiene. If your only backup is on the same network, you’re toast.

What to do:

  • Automate daily backups of critical files and systems.
  • Use a mix of local (external drive) and cloud backups.
  • Test restores quarterly—if you’ve never tested it, it doesn’t count.
  • Think about: What data would shut your business down if you lost it tomorrow? Start there.

4. Limit Access to What People Actually Need

You don’t give every employee a company credit card—why would you give them admin access to your systems?

What to do:

  • Use the principle of least privilege: people only get access to the data and tools they need to do their job.
  • Remove access when someone changes roles or leaves.
  • Regularly review shared folders, tools, and admin panels for unused accounts.
  • Especially watch: Former vendors, interns, and old shared email logins.

5. Train Your People Like They’re Part of the Firewall—Because They Are!

Most attacks start with someone clicking a sketchy link. Cybersecurity isn’t just an IT thing; it’s a people thing.

What to do:

  • Run short, quarterly security awareness sessions (even 15 minutes works).
  • Teach staff to spot phishing, social engineering, and fake websites.
  • Encourage a “see something, say something” culture—don’t punish mistakes, learn from them.
  • Helpful tools: Free phishing simulators and basic security quizzes can make it fun and low-pressure.

Cyber Hygiene is a culture, not a checklist!

Small businesses don’t need enterprise-level budgets to stay secure. But you do need consistency, accountability, and a mindset shift: cybersecurity is part of operations, not just an IT afterthought.

Start small. Pick one of these habits and commit to it this month. Then layer in the rest. You don’t need to be perfect, just better than yesterday.

The Bank Like You Live Here mural, which includes an artistic representation of the desert in Tucson, and features black and white icons depicting favorite local attractions.

Tucson’s historic 4th Avenue is home to many local treasures—including eclectic gift shops touting local goods, popular downtown restaurants, and a thriving bar and nightlife scene. In true Tucson fashion, it is also home to many murals that adorn the walls of local businesses. Now, a new mural has joined that landscape: a collaboration between Vantage West Credit Union and local artist Maxie Adler.

Located near the intersection of 8th Street and 4th Avenue, the mural is a love letter to Tucson, blending the sprawling desert landscape with black and white illustrations representing local landmarks, restaurants, and businesses. A film reel and a cowboy hat represent the thrill and adventure of Old Tucson. A diamondback rattlesnake slithers across the mural as an homage to Rattlesnake Bridge. A grad cap, laptop, and beaker celebrate the renowned educational programs at the University of Arizona and Pima Community College. The mural represents the idea of reinvesting in the community you love—supporting local businesses, artists, and the future of Tucson.

If the mural’s distinct style looks familiar, it’s because Maxie Adler has left her creative mark across Arizona. She has also painted murals for the Mission Garden near Downtown Tucson, the Blenman Elm Neighborhood, the Tucson Holiday Ice Rink, and the Tempe Public Library. In addition to painting, Adler enjoys exploring a variety of creative mediums, including weaving, dying, and printing, with her artwork displayed and promoted in various exhibits and news outlets across the state of Arizona and parts of Mexico.

Artist Maxie Adler uses a paintbrush to work on her mural.

We caught up with Adler to learn more about her background as an artist and her inspiration for the mural:

Vantage West (VW): What inspired you to become an artist?

Maxie Adler (MA): When I was younger and people asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, I’d say “art teacher” because I didn’t know you could be an artist for a living. It wasn’t until senior year of high school that I really acknowledged my own creativity, talent, and excitement towards the arts, but I still didn’t know I was “becoming an artist.”

I remember the project that opened this door for me. My teacher instructed us to design or draw however we wanted on a folder for class—just to explore. This was one of the first projects in an art class where the instruction wasn’t about the fundamentals, but instead about exploration and expression.

As I see it, we are all artists. It’s just finding the right invitation—and most importantly courage—to allow yourself to create.

Another major focus and inspiration for me is the natural world and this resilient desert I’m lucky enough to call home. I take my cues from the land, the water, the plants, and the animals. Above all, they inspire anything I create.

VW: Can you share a bit about your education, background, and the steps that led you to who you are today?

MA: I studied Fibers at Arizona State University and got my BFA in 2015. I was in an oil painting class when the Fibers professor came into the room and asked who wanted to paint on textiles instead of canvas. That day, I changed my degree from painting to fibers, not knowing what it entailed. I fell in love immediately with weaving and surface design in my first weaving class, which massively informs my drawing style and use of color that people see in my mural work.

After college, I didn’t immediately dive into a career as an artist. I worked briefly in tech and then worked for nonprofits doing environmental advocacy. It was during my time as an intern for the Center for Biological Diversity that I completed my first mural, which honors endangered species of the borderlands whose habitat is sliced by the border wall. Ultimately, I found that a focus on my creativity makes me the best version of myself, and through this prioritization I can intersect all my interests and continue to be an advocate for the environment. I committed to being an artist full time in 2021.

Now, I include wildlife in all of my murals! In the Vantage West mural, there is an ocelot near the legend. This ocelot was recently documented in mountain ranges both east and west of Tucson, which means it crossed the Santa Cruz River! The ocelot and the river are on the map, as well as our mountain ranges, because they’re a vital part of our home.

VW: Do you have a favorite piece you have created? What makes it stand out to you?

MA: One of my favorite murals I’ve done is located at Mission Garden. I’m proud of this piece because I got to work with youth artists from the Pascua Yaqui Boys and Girls Club in collaboration with the Santa Cruz Valley National Heritage Area and Mission Garden. This project is an intersection of my work with the community and my work as an artist. I volunteer with local coalitions whose mission is to protect the Santa Cruz River and Tucson‘s Birthplace (the land at the base of Sentinel Peak, or ‘A’ Mountain). The mural at Mission Garden celebrates the 4,000 years of agricultural history in the Tucson basin. It was amazing to share this experience with youth artists and design a piece that honors this history and the land.

A mural of plants sits below a mountain with a white "A" painted at the top of the mountain.

VW: Your murals have a distinct look that combines elements that are in color and black and white. Tell us about this style and how you developed it.

MA: I like to think of my style as representing the spirit of the object more than the object itself. This style developed from blind contour drawing—a practice of drawing an object or person with one continuous line while only looking at them and not the paper. I started doing this and then going back to the drawing, thickening lines and adding design elements. I love the way it captures movement, and the singular drawn line is like weaving with a continuous thread. I’ve enjoyed developing and playing with this textured, line-heavy style. I love the contrast and power of black and white, so I’ve gravitated towards it in all my work. The color backgrounds help the figures pop.

VW: Tell us about your work on the Vantage West mural—what was the process like to design and then create the mural?

MA: Designing this mural was a big challenge with a big reward! I’m incredibly happy with how it turned out. I loved designing the individual icons. I was encouraged to create each icon in my own style and experience of the place. Because I was born and raised here in Tucson, I have many fond memories of each of the places we included, and it was fun to play around with how to interpret them.

Tucson is a vast city with awesome places to visit near and far, so it was a puzzle to give each the proper space and flow. This is the first map I’ve designed and I had to release the part of me that wanted to make it “accurate” and instead lean into the whimsical nature of my style.

I am extremely grateful for the support, feedback, and ideas from the teams at Vantage West and BRINK. They really helped me bring the design to the next level and it was fun to have extra eyes for feedback and brainstorming.

The next time you find yourself on 4th Avenue, be sure to keep an eye out for the mural and see how many locations you can name before looking at the legend! How many have you visited? Is there one on the map that you haven’t been to yet? It might be an opportunity to find a new adventure or experience.

Every spring, we declutter closets, deep clean our homes, and refresh our surroundings—but what about our finances? Just like an overstuffed junk drawer, financial clutter can build up over time, making it harder to focus on what really matters. As the weather warms up, take the opportunity to spring clean your finances: reset, reorganize, and make smart financial moves that will benefit you all year long. Your home’s equity could be a smart way to do it.

Dust Off Your Budget

Imagine this: You’re tackling spring cleaning, finally getting rid of those old boxes in the garage, and making space for a fresh, organized home. Now, apply that same mindset to your finances.

Start with a quick financial audit—review your budget, track your spending, and see if there are ways to optimize your cash flow. Cancel unused subscriptions, check for better rates on insurance or utilities, and consider consolidating high-interest debt to free up money for more important goals. A little financial housekeeping now can help clear the path for future opportunities.

Tidy Up Debt and Expenses

Many homeowners have built up significant equity in their homes over the past few years, but they may not realize they can put that equity to work. If you have financial goals—whether it’s consolidating debt, handling unexpected expenses, or funding home improvements—accessing your home’s equity could be a smart way to do it.

A Home Equity Line of Credit (HELOC) is one flexible option. It allows you to borrow against your home’s value as needed, similar to a credit card but typically at lower interest rates. Instead of stretching your budget to cover big projects or expenses all at once, a HELOC gives you financial breathing room.

Make Room for Home Projects

For many, spring cleaning isn’t just about organizing—it’s about transformation. Whether you’re dreaming of a new kitchen, a backyard oasis, or energy-efficient upgrades, investing in your home can improve your daily life and increase long-term value.

A HELOC allows you the flexibility to take on home projects without dipping into savings or using high-interest credit. With funds available when you need them, you can start with a small refresh or tackle a full renovation at your own pace.

Spring Forward with Confidence

A well-organized home feels lighter and more manageable, and the same goes for your finances. This season, take the time to reset, clear out unnecessary expenses, and create a financial strategy that supports your goals.

If you’re curious about how home equity can work for you, now is a great time to explore your options. A little financial spring cleaning today can set you up for a stronger, more secure tomorrow.

At Vantage West Credit Union, we believe your banking should work for you, right where you live, whether that means financing home upgrades, covering unexpected expenses, or giving yourself more flexibility. That’s why we encourage you to bank like you live here—with local financial solutions that make sense for your home, your budget, and our community.

To celebrate the launch of our new tap-to-pay debit and credit cards, we wanted to do more than just talk about convenience; we wanted to support one of our local member businesses, Di Luna Candles. So, we decided to surprise shoppers by covering the cost of their purchases and spread joy—one tap at a time.

A Saturday Full of Surprises

We visited the Di Luna Candles + Goods gift shop, located at 3061 N Campbell Ave in Tucson, on a bustling Saturday during their popular Saturdays Market. During these markets, the Di Luna team invites local coffee trucks, artists, and vendors to set up in the parking lot right outside their gift shop. The market has become a favorite local tradition, drawing in shoppers to explore and support a number of local vendors in one stop. Inside the gift shop, shoppers can find stunning handcrafted candles, bath salts, diffusers, and wax melts—along with goods from over 50 small businesses, with an emphasis on products from women-owned businesses. And it wasn’t just the products that lit up the room that day.

Joy, Candles, and Many Smiling Faces

As shoppers browsed, our team quietly stepped in. When they reached the register, we surprised them with the news: “Your purchase is on us, courtesy of Vantage West!” The reactions? Pure magic.

But the surprises didn’t stop there. We also crashed a candle-making workshop to surprise the attendees with free candles. Plus, if a shopper turned out to be a Vantage West member, we added an extra candle to their purchase for free. It was our way of saying thank you for your continued loyalty and for choosing to bank with a financial institution that values community and local engagement.

Why It Matters

We are immensely grateful to Di Luna Candles for their membership and the incredible work they do. Their dedication to creating unique, handcrafted candles brings warmth and light to our community. By supporting businesses like Di Luna Candles, we reaffirm our commitment to fostering a thriving local economy and creating moments that matter. Whether it’s helping you tap to pay with ease or surprising you on an ordinary shopping trip, we’re here to make every experience a little brighter.

Here’s to many more moments of shared joy and community spirit!
