The willow sawfly caterpillar (Nematus oligospilus) is a common defoliator found across North America, Europe, and parts of South America. Often mistaken for a true caterpillar, it is actually the larval stage of a sawfly—a type of non-stinging wasp in the family Tenthredinidae. These larvae are voracious feeders on willow trees (Salix spp.), and heavy infestations can strip a tree of its foliage in a matter of days. Understanding their biology, identifying damage early, and applying targeted management strategies are essential for protecting ornamental and native willows.
Identification and Life Cycle
Willow sawfly larvae are typically 15–20 mm long when fully grown, with a green to yellowish-green body, a dark head capsule, and six or more pairs of prolegs. Unlike butterfly or moth caterpillars, sawfly larvae have more than five pairs of prolegs and lack crochets (tiny hooks) on the prolegs. Adults are small, black, wasp-like insects about 6–8 mm long, with a broad connection between the thorax and abdomen.
The life cycle is relatively fast. Adults emerge in spring and lay eggs in rows along the edges of willow leaves. Eggs hatch within a week, and larvae begin feeding gregariously. They pass through several instars over 2–4 weeks before dropping to the soil to pupate. In warmer regions, two to three generations can occur per year, with populations building rapidly by late summer.

Host Plants and Feeding Damage
Willows are the primary hosts, including weeping willow (S. babylonica), white willow (S. alba), and various hybrid cultivars. Thresholds for action depend on the tree’s value and health. In ornamental landscapes, even light defoliation may be unacceptable, while in natural stands, intervention is usually reserved for heavy, repeated attacks that threaten tree survival.

Integrated pest management (IPM) is the preferred approach, combining cultural, biological, and chemical tactics. For small trees or light infestations, hand-picking larvae or pruning affected branches can be effective. Encouraging natural enemies—such as birds, predatory insects, and parasitoid wasps—helps keep populations in check.

- Insecticidal soaps and horticultural oils: Effective against young larvae with minimal impact on beneficial insects.

Avoiding excessive nitrogen fertilization can reduce the succulent new growth that sawflies prefer. In areas with recurring problems, consider planting less susceptible willow species or alternative landscape trees.
