Downspouts channel water directly from your roof, but simply letting it pool at the foundation is a recipe for disaster. Why Bury Downspouts Instead of Using Extensions
While a simple flexible downspout extension is a common solution, it has significant drawbacks. Extensions are often unsightly, can be easily damaged by lawn mowers, and frequently get clogged with grass clippings and debris. More importantly, they often deposit water too close to the foundation, especially during heavy downpours. Burying the downspout solves these issues by moving the discharge point away from the structure, distributing water over a wider area, and keeping your yard looking tidy.

Planning Your Underground Route
The success of your project starts long before you dig a hole. You must plan a route that slopes consistently downward to ensure water flows by gravity. Aim to terminate the discharge at least 6 to 10 feet away from your foundation, ideally in a low-lying area, a storm drain, or a dry well. Avoid routing the line near your septic drain field or under a driveway, as the heavy weight can crush the pipe.
