the difference between an authentic Japanese Godzilla story like this one and the gentrified Hollywood versions that's been pumped out over the last decade or so, is simply the heart and emotion beneath it all. this isn't some CGI showfest of two monsters clashing and destroying cities. You've probably seen that a million times already, this is a human story that quietly underscores powerful.

We leave you the future. At the behest of some of my friends, this long-overdue rewatch was of the "Minus Color" version of the film. While I think that it was a fun "one and done" viewing experience, at its best for sure bring me back to how well I think the original Godzilla utilizes black and white, I do with certainty prefer this movie with color.

With that out of the way, I of course. I've watched Godzilla: Minus One two times now: once in its base form in IMAX back in December, and again in 'Minus Color' in a standard theatre hours ago. While the IMAX experience was more immersive and powerful, I've got to give the edge to 'Minus Color' for my preferred version of the film.

The black and white look fits this story a lot more, given its runback to Godzilla's. Crisp daylight carnage, post-war melodrama, and a powerful score that all make Godzilla potent and fresh yet again. Godzilla Minus One makes a period war film out of the kaiju premise: here Godzilla is a destroyer who heaps new waves of apocalyptic destruction on a just-recovering post-WW2 Japan, and Ryunosuke Kamiki the lead who faces off against him is a "failed" kamikaze pilot who is.

Gareth Edwards, director of Godzilla (2014), attended a screening of this film. He said he felt jealous while watching the film and stated, "This is what a Godzilla movie should be like." The crew created Godzilla's roar by simply playing the original Godzilla roar over loud speakers and recording the audio. I had the pleasure of seeing this "Minus Color" in theaters for my first viewing.

Godzilla fans know there are two types of Godzilla movies; and we love both of them. I adore seeing Godzilla have giant battles with kaiju, but there is something special about the Zilla films that strive to be a drama. Minus One echoes the original masterpiece and brings us back to the elements that made that film so great.
