If you want to keep quail you will have to organise your project. You
will need to really know what breed of quail you want to farm. We would
strongly recommend either the Coturnix or Bobwhite quail. This will
help in deciding the sort of coops needed and the amount of space. You
will also have to ascertain if you are going to farm your quail on the
floor or in wire baffled coops. Raising quail in ground pens can
present more disease issues then raising on wire. Specifically if you
live in a damp type location.
In the event you are starting away as a newbie to farming quail, you
will need to have everything you require in place before you make a
purchase of eggs or quail baby chicks. Buying quail eggs will save you
some money as opposed to buying chicks. When you are a first timer, you
may have a low hatch rate due to lack of knowledge. Though if you plan
on going for this venture you will at some time have to use an
incubator anyhow. Quail are not proven to hatch their own eggs very
well in captivity.
Here are the things you require to have in place before you get your
quail. You will need an incubator, I suggest a fan forced air, self
turning kind of incubator. You will need a brooder or brooding
location. The location needed is determined by the number of quail
chicks you will have. You will also need your grow out and pairing pens
built. I may also suggest you check your incubator and brooder to be
sure they are functioning properly before you order your birds.
Note this, rearing quail is totally different than any animal you have
at any time raised. The more information you can get before you start,
the better off you will be.
