In this entry, I take a look back at the M5 CSL and the limited public information that is available about what is arguably the greatest M car BMW never released. BMW M3 CSL V8, M5 CSL, M6 CSL: M automobiles that no-one has ever seen. We take an exclusive peek inside the secret BMW M garage and encounter prototypes which were developed for maximum performance, but never saw the light of day.
In 2009, BMW M wanted to celebrate the M5 's 25th anniversary and did so by unveiling the M5 CSL prototype. This was to be a radical evolution of the E60 M5 V10 engine, which was bored out to 5.5. In BMW's top-secret prototype lab is an E60 M5 CSL one-off, which featured a 621 horsepower V10 and a DCT gearbox.
