BMW X1 At A Glance Honest John Overall Rating BMW's smallest SUV is better than ever, thanks to a new platform, fresh technology and a strong engine line. The BMW X1 has taken three generations to get into its groove as a desirable family SUV. The first-generation car arrived back in 2009 as a slightly awkward looking crossover based on the 3 Series Touring.

The second-generation car hit the market in 2016, with a shift to the MINI Countryman. Practical, comfortable, great to drive I changed from mercedes c class diesel estate as I needed more ride height (I have to access my boat via a rough track) It has proved very practical, suprisingly good to drive. Comfort fine, being higher gives good vision.

Fuel consumption not great 35mpg around town. Ride a little stiff but thats the penalty for good handling with suv. Only real.

A pleasant, versatile and reliable family car I bought this car - one of the first examples of the current version - from our local BMW agent in late 2022/early 2023, after 3 years with a Tesla Model 3. This is my second mk3 X1 and overall am happy, love the economy as averaging high 40's mpg and on a recent trip from London to Inverness average 51.1 with an average speed of 68 mph so pretty amazing. It's an X1, so it's considered an entry level BMW. BUT it's still a BMW. Damn fun to drive.

And although it's not fully loaded, it's still a luxury car. Also, Consumer Reports picked BMW as the #1 car brand, ahead of Mercedes, Audi, Toyota, and Honda. Keep it regularly maintained and you shouldn't have any major problems.

Reply reply. The first generation of X1 looked somewhat awkward, BMW design language applied to a car not really possessing the correct proportions. The second-gen car offered a big improvement, but now this.

The first X1 came out in 2009, which isn't so long ago, but it was clear that BMW and the car industry in general were still figuring out what customers actually wanted from these vehicles.
