How to Prune Lamb's Ear Plant for Healthy Growth
Trimming your lamb's ear plant isn’t just about keeping it tidy—it’s key to encouraging bushier growth, improving air circulation, and preventing disease. Mastering the right pruning techniques ensures your silver-green foliage stays lush and visually striking all season long.
How to Prune Lamb's Ear Plant: Timing and Techniques
The best time to prune lamb's ear is in early spring, just as new growth begins. Use sharp, clean shears to remove old, damaged, or leggy stems at a 45-degree angle just above a leaf node. This encourages healthy regrowth. Avoid heavy pruning in fall to prevent cold damage. Focus on shaping the plant to maintain its iconic rosette form while removing spent foliage.
Tools and Preparation for Successful Pruning
Begin with high-quality pruning shears or small hedge clippers to ensure clean cuts without crushing stems. Wipe tools with rubbing alcohol between plants to prevent disease spread. Wear gloves to protect hands from the plant’s soft but somewhat abrasive leaves. Work slowly, inspecting each section for dead or overcrowded growth before cutting.
Post-Pruning Care to Promote Recovery
After pruning, water lightly to support new growth but avoid overwatering. Apply a thin layer of organic mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Monitor the plant for signs of stress or fungal issues, especially in humid conditions. Regular light pruning every few months will keep your lamb's ear thriving and full.
With precise pruning and attentive care, your lamb's ear plant will reward you with a compact, vibrant display year after year. Take action today—trim gently, shape thoughtfully, and watch your garden flourish.
