How to Trim Lamb's Ear Plants for Healthy Growth
Lamb's ear plants, with their soft, velvety leaves, add texture and charm to gardens and indoor spaces—but without proper care, they can become leggy and unruly. Regular trimming is essential to maintain their appearance and promote vigorous new growth.
How to Trim Lamb's Ear Plants for Optimal Health
Trimming lamb's ear plants is simple yet impactful when done correctly. Start by removing dead or damaged leaves at the base using clean, sharp scissors to prevent disease spread. For shaping, cut back overgrown stems just above a leaf node to encourage branching. Focus on trimming in early spring or after flowering to avoid disrupting bloom cycles. Always trim no more than one-third of the plant at once to maintain resilience.
Timing and Tools for Successful Trimming
The best time to trim lamb's ear plants is in early spring, before new growth begins, though light shaping can occur throughout the growing season. Use sharp, sanitized shears to ensure clean cuts that heal quickly. Wearing gloves protects your hands from the plant’s slightly irritating hairs. Work slowly, stepping back often to assess symmetry and balance, ensuring an attractive, tidy form.
Post-Trim Care and Maintenance
After trimming, apply a balanced fertilizer to support regrowth and consider a light mulch layer to retain moisture. Monitor for pests or stress, especially after heavy pruning. Consistent care not only preserves shape but strengthens the plant’s ability to thrive season after season.
