To check the engine codes on your BMW, you will have to perform what they call a stomp test. Before we get into how to perform that, you have to understand that BMW used two types of Bosch engine management systems. This is Bosch Motronic M1.1 and M1.3.
Early versions (M1.1) used a ECU with a 153 on it. Unfortunately you can not perform a stomp test with this ECU. Later BMW ECUs used a 173.
This video shows how to do a stomp test on your BMW e30 ECU when you have a check engine light to see why the check engine light is on. Overview BMW E30s from 1988 onwards have Bosch Motronic versions M1.1, M1.3 and M.7 and can display fault diagnostic codes. These can be used to identify faults in the system.
NOTE: THESE CODES ARE NOT RELEVANT FOR UK CARS. THEY ARE ONLY RELEVANT FOR CARS WITH THE "ENGINE CHECK" LIGHT Procedure For safety reasons, put the transmission in neutral, and turn the ignition key to "On" position but. the check light will blink if any of the light on the overhead panel are on, when you start ANY car you are supposed to hold the brake, BMW integrated this into the E30's, if you dont press the brake pedal during startup you will get the light until you press the brakes.
If the flashing light continues after that, then something else on the overhead is triggering it. If no other lights are on. OBDI BMW Trouble Codes for Classic BMW Cars 1211 DME control unit did not pass self-test.

BMW Mechanic: bimmaster Hi, your model can display fault codes without a scan tool by flashing the check engine light.
This method is commonly referred to as the "stomp test," as it requires pressing the gas pedal five times to initiate the code reading. Here's the procedure to follow; please let me know what faults, if any, are stored. This then sends a signal to the Motronic ECU to send fault codes to the Service Indicator Light.
On the E36 models, the procedure works the same way, but the timing at which you press/release the gas pedal is faster than on the E30. Just keep at it, and you will eventually get the correct speed. Watch the Â"Check EngineÂ" light.
