Updated August 2025. I have a budget of £30k and can't help noticing that the next model down, i.e. 530d M Sport, commands a much lower price.
Can anyone explain the main differences between the 2 models to a BMW newbie? The 535D is a bit more over engineered than the 530D - bigger brakes, a few engine tweeks that aid reliability, cast manifold that generally don't crack (530D don't have these as standard) and as the turbos aren't variable vein, they are much more reliable. You also generally get a much better average spec.
It's time for a new car and I've quite fancied a 5 series BMW. I've been looking at the diesel variants and have narrowed it down to an '07 530d or an '05/06 535d. I would prefer an '07 535d with lowish mileage but have a max budget of £18k.
Is there much of a difference between the two. The 530d and 535d are both decent cars. In some ways, if I was to move from my current 335d to a 5 Series, I might consider a 530d.
