The BMW M6 is a high-performance version of the 6 Series marketed under the BMW M sub-brand from 1983 to 2019 (with a hiatus from 1990 to 2004). Introduced in the coupe body style, the M6 was also built in convertible and fastback sedan ('Gran Coupe') body styles for later generations. An M6 model was built for each of the first three generations of the 6 Series.

In 2006, the BMW M6 returned shortly after the reintroduction of the 6 Series. The M88/3 motor was used in the first generation M6. It used a modified version of the M88/1 which was the heart and soul of the M1 race car, with a now symbolic straight six and 3.5 liters developing 286 horsepower.
The racey unit propelled the M6 to 158 miles per hour, making it BMW's second fastest production car behind the M1 itself.
