Sloan (b. Philip Gary Schlein, September 18, 1945, New York) - Lead Vocals, Various Instruments. The original Grass Roots members (on the first hits) was songwriting duo P.
F. Sloan and Steve Barri. backed by some studio musicians, that started recorded for Dunhill.
Then they formed a group and went on the road. When Sloan and Barri lost interest in touring, another band was hired as The Grass Roots. The Grass Roots In 1965, Rob Grill and 3 others teamed up with mega-hit producer Steve Barri (The Mamas & The Papas, Tommy's Roe, Four Tops, and Dusty Springfield) to form The Grass Roots.
Since their formation The Grass Roots have gone on to chart 29 singles; 13 of which went gold followed by 2 gold albums and 1 platinum album. They maintained their popularity on the oldies touring circuit, with dozens of members having come and gone. Rob Grill died on July 11, 2011, as the result of a stroke, but there is still a version of the Grass Roots touring today, with a couple of members, guitarist Dusty Hanvey and keyboardist Larry Nelson, having been involved since 1984.
The Floor members-Coonce (drums), Grill (vocals, bass guitar), Entner (guitar, keyboards, vocals), and Bratton (guitar)-opted for the latter, and the Grass Roots were born again. The newly configured Grass Roots of 1967 garnered an immediate hit with a remake of a pop song by an Italian group called the Rokes, "Let's Live for Today.".
