James Gunn's Superman movie trailer came flying in like a speeding bullet and immediately got the world's attention. There's already a lot of discourse and debate about Funn's version of. Long story medium: While working on a Superman video mashup, I started playing around with different color grade/correction for footage from "Superman Returns".
What I found was a preset (in Premiere Pro) that really blew me away. Along with boosting contrast and clarity (cutting the haze of the film's original color grade), it made Superman's costume POP while not greatly or garishly altering. As soon as people came in posting about the "Superman" trailer's color grading, others entered the chat to insist the shots looked fine.
This is my take on what the visuals should look like based on what I'm looking for in a Superman film. It seems they've already changed the colors of some shots over the past few months throughout. Panavision Genesis was chosen for Superman Returns because it was better, cheaper, and faster than 35mm film and looks more like 70mm.
Color grading the Genesis footage during dailies, not in post as is traditional with film, enabled the director to see what the finished image would look like. All of these shots look like they have a layer of brown haze over them. If James Gunn's Superman sells a brighter, kinder DCU without sanding off the grit, a big part of the persuasion happens in the grade. Company 3 founder and senior colorist Stefan Sonnenfeld shaped the film's palette into something that feels hopeful in daylight, legible in spectacle, and still dramatic when the world turns stormy.
I am a Superman Returns lover, so this is good news. I will offer some honest constructive criticism, take it as you will. Obviously SR was in need of some serious color "correction", and while what you've done looks 100% better than the theatrical color grading, I think it's just short of being perfect.
