In the latest Emerging Queer Voices essay, writer Hannah Clover considers ow Elsa from Frozen helped her define her own asexuality. Elsa and Kristoff even point out that Anna's instant attraction to Prince Hans is a bit ridiculous and unrealistic. What they fail to consider is Anna's heightened emotionality and childhood trauma of losing her parents and being shut out by her sister.
Elsa, of course, closes Anna out of her room and leaves the palace doors closed. It can also refer to the closed-off nature of Hans and Elsa's hearts, but ultimately Elsa opens up her palace doors to let Anna in and leaves the gates open at the end of the movie. Hans, on the other hand, closes the door on her and leaves her to die.
Elsa's dread over the coronation ball, Elsa's fear of people finding out her secret if she doesn't conceal it. Plus Elsa just strikes me as a more serious, down to earth and mellow person vs Anna. When Elsa asks Anna how she could sacrifice herself like that, Anna simply replies, "I love you." With Anna and Olaf's help, Elsa finally realizes that the way to temper her powers is not through fear and isolation, but love and connection.
As she opens herself to love, she is able to melt the snow and ice, restoring summer to Arendelle. After he removes Anna's memories of Elsa's powers to save Anna, their parents react in fear, shutting Elsa and the palace off from the entire world. So begins Elsa's life of fear.
Shut off from the world, she grows colder emotionally as her powers only grow stronger. Self sacrifice The climax however was much deeper as the 'act of true love' was made manifest through Anna's self-sacrifice to save her sister Elsa. This act is made more meaningful by considering the context of Anna's relationship with Elsa.
For most of Anna's life and up to that point Elsa had pushed her away and had shut her out. Frozen (2013) follows Anna (Kristen Bell), who joins forces with mountaineer Kristoff (Jonathan Groff) and his loyal reindeer Sven, setting off on a journey to find her sister Elsa (Idina Menzel), whose icy powers have trapped the kingdom of Arendelle in eternal winter, to try to break her icy spell. Furthermore, to get through to Elsa and have her come home, Anna has to split the metaphorical "ice" that grew in Elsa's "frozen heart" by showing her love.
In this case, it is sibling love, and Anna shows just that by sacrificing herself before Hans can kill Elsa. But Anna can see the beauty in Elsa that she can't see, saying "when are you going to see yourself the way I see you?" This self-doubt and its resolution, self-realization or awakening, plays strongly in the mysticism of the unfolding story. But Elsa wakes in the middle of the night, still hearing the call.
