Released in 2020, Unhinged quickly became a cultural talking point—not necessarily for its quality as a thriller, but for its premise and timing. Russell Crowe stars in this "real-time" thriller as a man who follows a woman (Caren Pistorius) she has a minor road rage incident. The film was one of the first major theatrical releases during the COVID-19 pandemic, making its debut history. Whether you're curious about the plot, want to critique its execution, or simply stumbled onto the title, here is your definitive guide on how to watch Unhinged in 2020's unique landscape.
Available Streaming Platforms
While physical media was a primary release path due to closed theaters, Unhinged landed on VOD (Video on Demand) platforms almost immediately. Digital rental and purchase options are widespread. As of late 2020, availability has shifted. Here is where you can likely find it:
- Amazon Prime Video: Often available for rental or purchase.
- Apple TV / iTunes: Standard digital rental or purchase.
- Vudu: A common VOD platform for new releases.
- Google Play Movies: Another standard option for digital access.
Always check your region's specific platform catalogs, as licensing changes. Subscription streaming (like Hulu or Netflix) may not have it yet, but digital storefronts are your most reliable bet.
Theatrical Release Context
To truly understand Unhinged, you need to know its theatrical rollout. In the summer of 2020, with most US theaters closed, Unhinged opened in select drive-ins and a few open cinemas. Seeing it in a nearly empty theater or a drive-in during the pandemic was a surreal experience. The film's box office returns were modest, but it holds a special place as a "pandemic-era release." If you wanted a safe, communal viewing experience, drive-in theaters were the go-to during the 2020 run.
Physical Media (Blu-ray & DVD)
For collectors or those wanting the highest quality, physical media is your friend. The DVD and Blu-ray copies of Unhinged were released in late 2020. They came with behind-the-scenes content and interviews with Russell Crowe. If you desire the film without internet buffering or platform restrictions, Blu-ray ensures you own a copy forever.
Checking Local Listings
Even though 2020 was a weird year for releases, the film's premiere was staggered. Some regions got it first in Europe before the US. If you are in the US, your local independent theaters or drive-ins may have shown it on their schedules. Checking Fandango or Atom Tickets was likely the quickest way to locate this specific title in your area during its initial run.
International Availability
Outside the US, Unhinged had a more traditional rollout in some markets. In countries where theaters were open, it played in cinemas. In others, it went straight to digital. Platforms like Sky Store (UK) or Google Play (various regions) offered it for rent or purchase. Always verify your local digital storefronts for the most current availability.
Final Thoughts on Watching Unhinged
Unhinged is a product of its time. Watching it in 2020 meant navigating a world of closed theaters and digital-first releases. Whether you choose to rent it digitally, pick up a Blu-ray, or catch a rare drive-in screening, the options are there. The film itself is a high-concept thriller that leans heavily on Russell Crowe's performance. It's a snapshot of a very specific moment in cinema history.
