How To Use Microsoft Security Essentials

 

Download Microsoft Security Essentials

Microsoft Security Essentials can only be downloaded and installed on Vista or Windows 7.  Windows 8, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 come with the program already installed as a part of the operating system and the name was changed to Windows Defender.  The application is the same in either version.

 

1.    Download the latest MSE Program copy and paste the following into your browser: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/14210/security-essentials-downloadScroll down

2.      to the English version

3.    Click on either the 32bit or 64bit link

4.    For Internet Explorer, wait for the yellow banner to appear at the bottom of the screen......

 

For High Speed Internet Users:  When the yellow banner appears at the bottom of the screen,  Click on Run.  Follow the installation wizard instructions to install.  

 

For Dial Up Internet Users:  When the File Download window will appears, Click on the small arrow  next to Save and then click on Save As.    Click on Desktop in the upper left corner and click Save.  Once downloaded, double click icon on your desktop and follow installation wizard instructions to install.

 

Note: For Chrome users there is no option to save as, so just watch the file progress in the lower left corner of the browser.  Once it finishes downloading, click on the file name to run or click the small arrow to the right of the file name and click on Open.  If you downloaded to your desktop, delete the icon from your desktop after installation is complete.

 

1.      Install Microsoft Security Essentials

2.    Double Click the MSE setup icon (mseinstaller.exe)on your desktop, or go to your Downloads folder and locate the file.

3.    Click Run if a security warning pop-up appears

4.    Choose your language, then click OK

5.    Click Next

6.    Click the button in front of I accept

7.    If it asks you to participate in the Customer Improvment Program, choose one and click Next.

8.    If it shows the following screen, Keep defaults (keep the check in the box for "If no firewall...etc.") and click Next

9.    If you receive the following message, then click Yes to create the folder

10. Click Install

11. Click Finish

12. Once finished, it will open to the Home tab and should immediately start an update.

 

Update Microsoft Security Essentials

Note: If you use Dial Up to access the internet, please connect to your service provider before attempting to update.

1.    Open Microsoft Security Essentials (Windows Defender)

2.    Click the Update tab

3.    Click Update button on the right.

 

Run a Full System Scan in Microsoft Security Essentials

1.    Open Microsoft Security Essentials (Windows Defender)

2.    In the Home tab, Click on the circle in front of Full

3.    Click Scan now

 

What to do after a System Scan

1.   Check the scan results by clicking on the History tab.

2.  Click on Quarantined items and then click on View details.

3.  Any viruses found will appear under Detected items.  To remove one infection at a time, just highlight the one you want to remove and then click on Remove.  Or...

To remove all infections found, click in the button Remove all.  It is not necessary to highlight any of them to remove all at once.

4.      Next click on All detected items and then click on View details.

You are done!  Do this once a week to keep your computer free of  Viruses.
