Windows Defender comes pre-installed on all Windows 8, 8.1 and Windows 10 machines.  It is quite easy to switch from any trial ware that came with your computer or if you want to stop using any of the paid Anti-Virus programs on the market today.  Just uninstall your current Anti-Virus program and Windows Defender will automatically see this and activate.  It is always recommended to verify it is active by opening Windows Defender immediately after removing any other program.  It may ask you to verify or enable the software upon the first opening and that's it!  Make sure it is updated and you are protected!

Update Windows Defender

Note: If you use Dial Up to access the internet, please connect to your service provider before attempting to update.

  1. If not already open, open Windows Defender
  2. Click on the Update tab.
  3. Click on Update button on the right.

Run a Full System Scan

  1. If not already open, open Windows Defender
  2. In the Home tab, click on the circle in front of Full 

3.      Click on Scan now.

What to do after a System Scan

  1. Check the scan results by clicking on the History tab.
  2. Click on Quarantined items and then click on View details.
  3. Any viruses found will appear under Detected items.  To remove one infection at a time, just highlight the one you want to remove and then click on Remove. 

OR To remove all infections found, click in the button Remove all.  It is not necessary to highlight any of them to remove all at once.
