The Trident Head Injury Support Group (THISG) assists people with brain injuries and their family members in coping with the deficits and related problems while recovering from their injuries. THISG, consisting of families and professionals, provides its members with emotional support, resource information, and social opportunities. THISG meets on the first Tuesday evening of each month from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm.
As we gather to share life with a traumatic brain injury, we will discuss resources, education, and support for each other on our recovery journey through caring and sharing.
We all attend THISG with visions, dreams, and ideas; we need to share our thoughts, whether small or large. We should contribute even when we think no one will listen or care.

Our mission is to facilitate discussion, foster support, build friendships, and encourage personal growth among our members.

What is a support group? Do I need one?
A support group offers the opportunity to share information and support one another in an environment of empathy and understanding.The best solutions to problems are often found in others who have faced similar situations. As a result, difficulties and emotions can be discussed freely without judgment, and new friendships can be formed.
Often, after an illness or injury, resuming life is not as simple as one might imagine.
However, this is especially true with brain injury, especially if that injury or illness leaves the individual with lifelong impairments. Both individuals and families can find opportunities for growth and adaptation as they navigate the life changes that come with a brain injury. Getting information and services can frequently be a maze of confusing and conflicting situations, leading to frustration.
It is common for friends to disengage and for extended family to become less involved in day-to-day activities. When an individual experiences an injury, it can lead to feelings of isolation for both the person and their family. However, this situation also presents an opportunity for the family to come together, strengthen their bonds, and support one another through the recovery process. As social contacts dwindle, so does the opportunity to interact with others. There are few outlets for dealing with the emotional aspects of lifestyle changes created by illness or injury.
Questions often remain unanswered, and the feeling of being alone in the situation intensifies.

What are the causes of TBI?
The assessment of traumatic brain injury (TBI) is intricate, yet the impact is substantial and often underestimated. According to the CDC (United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), approximately 1.5 million individuals in the U.S. experience a traumatic brain injury annually. Tragically, 50,000 people lose their lives due to TBI each year, while 85,000 individuals face long-term disabilities. In total, over 5.3 million Americans live with disabilities stemming from TBI. It’s important to note that these figures primarily account for patients admitted to TBI hospitals, excluding those treated in emergency rooms or doctors’ offices.
The causes of TBI are varied, with the leading contributors being car accidents, firearm incidents, and falls. Notably, injuries from firearms are particularly severe, with a staggering 90% of such cases resulting in fatalities. Young adults and older individuals are at heightened risk for TBI. In addition to traumatic brain injuries, there is also a significant risk of spinal cord injuries associated with vehicle crashes, firearm incidents, and falls.
As there is currently no cure for TBI, prevention remains the most effective strategy to mitigate these injuries. By focusing on safety measures and education, we can work towards reducing the incidence of TBI and its repercussions on individuals and families.
