They were occasionally in the same class.
She remembers when she first saw him, he appeared handsome and terribly hurt. Two titanium rods for femur bones affected his stride but he still walks better than most women trying to walk in high heels.
The founder genuinely believes a secret to having a happy everyday is to practice the fitness of the brain, body, and being. Matt was fit before he and the large driven object collided and he told me that his fitness contributed to him still being alive. The Happy Everyday movement having started in NYC in 1999, the founder remembered the story she heard from a male model. She knew him in NYC and he got wrecked in a motorcycle crash and doctor said he lived because he was fit.
In statistics we know that given the probability that the same variable (fitness) is repeated an infinite number of times, the chances of longevity are high, that’s great, but what actually can happen, we don’t know.
Even if we don’t want to be fit physically, many of us want to be happy and the last paragraph in How I Practice Being Dead So I Can live is a key.
Try it. Seriously, just do it.

After listening to Matt’s tragic blessing, We felt more people could benefit from knowing his story along with the subsequent secrets we shared for having a happy today and a happy every day.
Mid-September 2018 Matt and Happy Everyday Founder spoke for longer than they had ever before.
In passing they may have said hi, but he and founder never had a heart to heart. Since then, the founder attempted to write what Matt told her about his tragic blessing, and even, at times, she worked with him on presentations to use when invited to share his story and promote healthy living and sobriety.
Matt and the founder outlined his tragic blessing story to various minutes of a speech. They concluded, a video documentary is the better media publication for the telling of more of his tragic blessing story. A Happy Everyday media member helped record the footage.
This short philosophical read is to share a bit of the values Matt and the founder share. They want to focus on his experience and how the Happy Everyday mission helped him.
Matt went to, as we say in Greek, “aloe cosmos,” another world, for 2 months before his 35th birthday. He went via large driven object knocking him in to a coma.
The coma was not the practice of being dead so I can live, per title chapter here, but sometimes it is near death experiences that make humans happier or more kind.
To not drag on what the title of this chapter means, it means practicing what is also known as dead body pose, laying on the back or your back, arms by side of the ribs, palms up but hands naturally released of tension to where they naturally curl up a little.
Toes up but falling to the sides, heels together to start and naturally land where they may, making your feet like an open book. Look with eyes open, but only a sliver open, to a spot up about as high a ceiling relatively above your knees, past your nose, the soft gaze focal point.
Inhale through your nose, fill the belly area or abdomen so full of air you feel your back expand using an 8 count and then exhale slowly through the nose for 8 counts.
Focus only on the 8 count inhales filling the abdomen and keep the eyes at the soft gaze focal point. Six or four counts are OK too.
Drop tongue from roof of mouth, if it’s there. Breathe in 11 times. Keeping the focus is aimed to stop your brain from doing anything but just being. I relate this to being dead because I kill the thoughts that try to rule my actions and feelings.
By doing this, bliss is allowed in. It is a secret sign post to having a Happy Everyday.

Life in General in Twenty First Century:
Life in this world will become increasingly hard to live as years go by. The world population has now gone over 7 Billion. The world economic systems are subject to constant changes as the currencies in every country are being manipulated especially with the advent of computers. So the life of every human being is also in flux. So unless one prepares for life from childhood, the journey of life will become a problem. Parents of the children have a great responsibility, whether they know it or not. From ages 1-5 the care of the children is fully in the hands of their parents. From ages 6-12, children notice their surroundings more and more and are slowly becoming independent. Bad habits can set in at this age. From ages 13-19 - this is a pre-adult age and what they do will influence their entire life. Wrong steps in this age group will haunt one’s life.
Surely, the uneducated people will be at the bottom layers of society. Because of the advances in Medical Sciences people in future will live longer. They will live longer even though they are poor. This creates lot of problems for Governments as well as for the society they live in.
Children are born to married (sometimes to unmarried) people. A couple may have many children as our parents and grandparents. China after reaching a population of over 1.3 billion put a limit of one child for family. This is not a good sign for well-being of the children. They are always with adults. Now Chinese are slightly relaxing their stance. India tried population control and did not work. But I think most Indians seem to have now two children and that is a good sign for future.
To have children is one thing and the next big thing is on to raise them, so that they do not become beggars but become productive citizens. How productive they become depends solely on their parents during the years of age from birth to12 years. From 13-19 the children are in their teenage years where they slowly become more and more independent. The voting age is about 18 years in most countries and thus society believes that a human being is sufficiently equipped to make major choices. Most countries have a minimum age limit of 18 years for marriage licenses.
Chunduri Family in Eluru:
Chunduri family in Eluru is a large well-known family. The street where our house is located is named after my family name – Chundurivari Street. Pydah family from my grand-mother’s side in Kakinada is even bigger and well known family. Kanumuri family, my mother’s side of the family in Kakinada is also well known and large family.

Forefathers of CVC are Zamindars of Annadevara Peta and Prakkilanka estates established under British rule. These are small estates.
Under the leadership of Congress Party – Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru India received its independence on August 15, 1947. Chunduri family also used to have cultivatable Lands and a large parcel of garden in Peda Vegi. They also built a temple in the village of Ponangi. They built a family Choultry (Free House) to provide free lodging for people while travelling. The family also had Burma Shell Oil Company (BOC) agency. When I saw my old dilapidated house recently
BOC
in December 2015, I saw the old large BOC sign board sitting in one corner. The family discontinued their association with BOC before India gained Independence since it was a British Company. Zamindaris were abolished after India was granted Independence by British in 1947.
Some of the properties owned by the estates of Chunduri and Pydah families were under legal ‘litigations’ and were settled in 1960-70’s.
My grandmother is the daughter of Pydah Venkata Chalapathi (PVC) is a well-known Zamindar in Kakinada. Kakinada is a modern town and the headquarters of East Godavari District. PVC has many children. I was told that ancestors of Pydah family were employed by Pitapuram Maharaja (A Lower Level King). PVC’s brother is Pydah Sreerama Krishnayya. His children are Pydah Venkata Narayana MP (Member of Parliament) and Pydah Sreerama Krishnayya. Pydah Sreerama Krishnayya son is Pydah Venkateswara Rao. Pydah family founded many Temples and Choultries. These temples and choultries are supported by lands donated by Pydah Family.
Pydah Family Trust and their estates provided financial support for CVC for the BE - undergraduate studies in India. CVC’s mother’s brother (uncle) Kanumuri Acharyulu provided the lodging and food for four years to CVC. Without these assistances during the four years in the beginning of my studies, CVC life would have been different.
The elders of Chunduri family in Eluru:
I do not know much about the family of Chunduri Family before my grandfather. I saw the photographs of Lakshmi Narayana (father of Sriramulu) and Subba Rao (father Lakshmi Narayana) in our house. They came from somewhere (?) and settled in Eluru. Eluru is not a major city, but a smaller town than Kakinada. It is also not a village. It is the headquarters of West Godavari District.

Family squabbles reined and entire family was uncared for and ruined.
Ambition in politics took over Chunduri Sriramulu and Ratnamma. My grand-mother Ratnamma, was an Ex-Municipal Chairwoman (Mayor) and went to jail twice under the umbrella of Congress. Pydah family also was also very active in politics. Pydah Venkata Chalapati (CVC was named after PVC), donated ‘sizable’ amounts of money to Congress, Pydah Venkata Narayana served as an MP – Member of Parliament in Congress Party of India. They also knew Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru and invited them to Kakinada for visits and speeches. I have some of those photographs in my house here in USA.
Life at Chunduri Family House 1933-1950:
I remember even now the first day when I was admitted to elementary school in 1938. I remember the function and the headmaster of the elementary school which is located at the beginning of Chundurivari Street. I remember the class rooms and chalk boards. I remember the benches and stools in the school. I also remember the carbon slates for writing and writing sticks to write on the slates. White paper is not easily available. Pedda Mamayya had a printing press and he made very nice note books with white paper at his printing press during my studies in Eluru. I also remember Binder Appa Rao’s name. He and Compositor Appa Rao worked for many years (life time) for Star and Co, printing press and retired after Ram Kumar took over the printing press. I sent Ram Kumar money for the retirements of Binder Appa Rao and Compositor Appa Rao.
I also remember the functions of Deepavali, Boghi, Sankranti. They used to be very happy and family orientated functions
There was always some homework and I used to be very enthused to do all the homework. We used to have a ‘home’ tutor where an instructor comes to our family house and teach all the children numbering about 5 to 8. The instructor used to ask the students questions to answer. He used to ask me last when all others fail to answer. I always gave the correct answer. That made him and also me happy.
The joint family often used to take weekend excursions. They used to go to visit the large mango garden (20 acres?) in Peda Vegi. They had a small vacation house and they used to cook and sleep in that house. There were two cobra pits on either side of the bungalow. I used to be very afraid of the snakes. I used to say to my father that I was afraid and he used to say, they won’t bite you- just sleep. I used to snuggle between two people and sleep.
We used to have a bullock cart and got to Peda Vegi thota on bullock cart. . It used to be great experience and lot of fun with others in the cart. The children used to sing songs on the way.
I remember going on a boat in Lake Kolleru near Eluru. It was fantastic to view the colorful fish swimming in the shallow lake and to prepare and east lunch in one of the small islands in the lake.
During my elementary school, Chunduri Family used to have one small car, one motor cycle, on motor cycle with a side carriage. I remember that only my uncle did drive those vehicles. I do not remember that my father driving those.
At that time my grandmother was Chairman of Eluru Municipality and working for Congress Party of India.
Bad Habits:
Since the joint families are old establishments, relatives and others of the same caste, used to
live nearby. Probably there were about 20 people in similar age group. All these people became a close knit group and started playing Poker – gambling for money. Since all the families used to have large houses with many rooms, we used to hide in one of those rooms and lock it from outside and play insides with no talking so that no one knows that we were gambling. All the children were becoming ‘gamblers’. One of my cousin brothers (No names) became a ‘regular’ gambler. This bad habit transformed to stealing jewelry and his life ended with a suicide. Very sad indeed!!
My father used to scold me and spank me for playing the ‘Poker’ games. I think I came out of these bad habits (poker) when I was in fifth form (14-15 years of age).
Even with all distractions, I had an urge to finish all my homework. Sometimes, I did all the problems in that chapter even if they were unassigned. In those years, family problems in Chunduri Family took a bad turn. My father separated from joint family and started cooking their own meals separately. My father bought a cooker with many stacked compartments. My mother and father used to cook food separately for themselves and for their children. Sometimes there used to loud quarrels between my father, my uncle and grandfather and others.
I used to stay up very late until about 1 AM and do the homework. Family quarrels also grew. Because of influence of Chunduri family, it received a permit to receive electricity. Chunduri family was one of the few families in Eluru which had electricity. Because of the family squabbles, my father got only one line of electricity with one 40/60/100 watt bulb. I used to keep the lights on during late hours doing homework. My grandmother and father used to wake-up during late hours and ask me why I am working so late!
My food habits are very poor. Rice with hot mango pickles, some soup, and curds. Curds were not there for all members of the family because it is too expensive!. So they used to mix water with curds to make it buttermilk. I refused to take buttermilk. But no one cared. I used to be very thin – about 45 lbs during high school days.
My mother used to go to Kakinada once every year to be with her father and brothers and their wives and children. Sometimes I could not go because of my studies at school. During those times I used to eat food at my neighbors. One I stayed with Chinni’s family. The head of their family was a retired ‘Doctor’ and he came from a neighboring town with his large family. That was great experience in eating food with a large family. Their eldest son used to own a medical store in Eluru. Their other son was Lakshman Rao and he became one of my friends. They have a daughter ‘Roja’ – very cute girl. They also have another daughter Sundari. My younger sister married Sundari’s son – Prasad. He now retired as a Chief Engineer, Andhra Government and lives in Hyderabad. I met him and his family recently in 2015 while I was in India.
Finally, High school ended in 1948. I got very high scores in high school. During the last quarter in high school, before the SSLC Public Exams, I received the highest grade 98/100 in Mathematics.
Luckily for Eluru and its residents, a Junior college named C.R.R. College started next to M.H. School in 1946.
There used to be two sections with 120 students in each. The lecture hall was a long shed with many rows of seating with a thatched roof. The instructor has to shout so that people in the last row can hear. This is the first time, there were girls in class room. Only five or six girls out of 120 students. A woman usher used to accompany these six girls to the class room before each class session.
High ranking in these two years is essential to secure admissions to Engineering or Medical colleges. Not only there was state wide ranking but also very few seats are available. About 40% of the seats in Engineering and Medical School are reserved for students from lower and scheduled castes. I received 2nd rank in math, physics and chemistry in 1950 I.Sc. in written Public exams out of 200 students. These are not multiple choice exams but long hand written exams. The state-wide exams were made by external committees and not by those who taught the subject matter in local colleges.
I applied for admission to Engineering Colleges in Madras State. The population of Madras State at that time was around 50 million. There were only four Engineering Colleges with about 400 students being admitted to the four engineering colleges. About 150 seats were reserved for lower and scheduled castes. So there were only about 250 seats available for selection for whole of Madras State with 50 million people.
Recommendation Letters:
Apart from scholastic grades, recommendation letters were also required for admissions. The following people wrote the recommendations.
Pydah Venkata Narayana, Member of Parliament who knows my father wrote a recommendation as an MP for a seat.
One of my distant uncle Kanumuri Acharyulu was an Assistant/Executive Engineer of Madras Government and he was one of my inspirations during my high school career – although I have never seen him in person. He wrote recommendation for my seat in College of Engineering.
The third recommendation letter was from Principal, CRR College
Travel to Madras in 1950:
During the summer of 1950, I was accompanying my father who was visiting local merchants who were customers for his business. During conversations, my father told them, that I passed I.Sc., and applied for admission to College of Engineering. They were all excited and insisted that my father and I should go to Madras and ‘check’ it out.
My father talked to my uncle Kanumuri Acharyulu in Kakinada, Mutyam (my uncles’ friend) and we four went to Madras by train which is about 300 miles from Eluru. My uncle has a friend, an engineering contractor Nunna Subrahmanyam. He was a truly entrepreneur and went to France to secure license to build Prestressed Concrete Bridges in India. His company was selected as the contractor to build Alamuru Prestressed Concrete Bridge in Madras State.
This was my first time to visit Madras. It is one of the major cities in India. Very amazing compared to Eluru which is my town. During that visit, I also met Cinema Star Anjali Devi (My uncle knows her) in person and I was very amazed to see such a glamourous person at 17 years of age.
When we reached Madras Railway Station, I was really amazed and thrilled. That is the first time I saw many cars and busses. A policeman standing at the junction in the middle of the street and directing traffic with hand signals.
When we reached College of Engineering, Guindy the results for admissions to Engineering College were already posted and I was on the list to get admitted to College of Engineering, Kakinada with a rank of 34. World War II ended during that time, many military barracks in Kakinada were vacated and College of Engineering, Kakinada was established in 1950 (First Batch) in those barracks.

My eldest uncle was very gratuitous in letting me stay at his house in Kakinada for four years. I was the one in the Chunduri family escaped the ‘family politics’ in Eluru and moved to Kakinada in 1950

My aunt (Seetha Maha Lakshmamba?), cooked hot food for breakfast and boiled hot water for taking showers in mornings for four years – She used to get up at 4:00 AM or so. Very great personal imposition -
I was given a very nice one bed room on the second for sleeping and studies.
Absolutely no disturbance for studies.
Used to get up in the morning about 5:30 am, wash-up, eat and then bicycle (4 miles) to college of engineering be there and learn and study:
7:00 to 10:00 am Surveying and labs
10:00 am to 12 noon, lecture
12:00 noon to 1:00 pm – eat something
1:00 pm to 4:00 pm, Labs and practical’s.
Back on Cycle –Ride home 4 miles to my uncle’s house
This routine went on for four years.
Go to many free movies. Movies were free – no admission charge – as my uncle is known to the family which owned a movie theater and my uncle’s printing press used to print Ticket Books for the theater. I made a count for one year. I think I went to see over 120 movies (for many movies I only stayed a short time) in one year. The urinals in theaters were terrible.
Study, do homework , sleep and repeat for four years !!!
During third year we went on surveying camp and set up ‘base line’ for accurate surveys.
During fourth year we surveyed an old bridge connecting Kakinada to Jagannadha Puram (?) There were land surveys of nearby streets and hydrographic surveys of the canal. I developed for the project - a bow string Girder Bridge across the canal using Reinforced Concrete Handbook by Reynolds- an English publication (1954). I looked on web recently. It is still published and is in its 11th edition in 2016. 62 years later!!
I looked at the bridge site when I was in India in 2015. It looked like the same old bridge- after 61 years – may have been strengthened.

Going to school for four year is an expensive proposition.
I never asked my uncle for money.
For one year, my uncle gave me a ‘carte-blanche’ to eat refreshments at a famous hotel in Kakinada. I used to charge the food to his account! Great!
For one semester, I did not have money to pay Rs 100.00 for Tuition fees. I did not wish to ask my uncle for money. So I asked Palivela Bhaskara Rao, my distant uncle and he readily gave me Rs. 100.00. Apparently, he liked me even though I was small and timid. Gave me a great lunch. His wife was from Pydah family. After I received other monies, I gave him back Rs 100.00 but he refused to take the money. I was very pleased.
Palivela Subba Rao is an elder and is the father of Palivela Bhaskara Rao. They used to live in the same house. During his last years, he was bedridden. He invited my mother and I went along with her. He treated her kindly and gave her a present of Rs.100.00 (I think).I was moved

Post Graduate Studies in India 1955-1956
Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore is one of the highest rated institute in India, fantastic buildings, swimming pool, Vegetarian and non-vegetarian lunch and dinner halls, very nice hostels with single rooms with spring cots in student hostels and hot water for bathing by hostel staff. This post graduate university accommodated only 400 students and built into the luxury of Tata’s.
There were only two post-graduate students in the Institute - first 2 students studying for an MS in India. One is myself and the second student was Iyengar, son of the Chief Engineer, Mysore Government. Having a program for 2 students is very unusual. It was only possible to do since the institute is run by Tatas
After graduation from Indian Institute of Science with D.I.I.Sc (P.E.) Civil and Hydraulics in December 1956, CVC got job as an Assistant Professor Structural Engineering, Birla College of Engineering, Pilani, Rajasthan, India at Rs. 400.00 basic. The salary for an Executive Engineer Andhra Government was Rs. 500.00 basic.
College of Engineering, Pilani is built by Birla family, one of the very rich but frugal families in India.
I was given a large ‘Full Professor’s quarters for staying along with another faculty member.
I bought a present, my old “Rojai’ a fancy bed cover for my mother from Pilani.
Preparation to study in USA - 1957
I applied to University of Illinois, Urbana – a major university offering research and Doctors programs in Civil/Structural Engineering for a Ph.D. degree and an Assistantship. Assistantship means that the candidates are paid to work on a research project for 20 hours a week (which can become their Ph.D. Thesis Project) and go full time for studies (3 graduate courses per semester of 4.5 months).
Few people drop out of the Ph.D., program prior to reaching Prelims for Ph.D.

University of Illinois - Urbana – USA
I did not eat much during fights as the meals were not vegetarian type. In London Airport I was given a coupon to eat at a fancy airport restaurant. I asked them to make an omelet as I was eating sometimes an omelet at India Coffee House in Kakinada on my way to College of Engineering. The restaurant served an omelet with full of yolks inside which was cooked on the edges. I just ate a little bit and left. Perhaps I was very-very shy to ask for a replacement
Arrival to University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana:
The last leg of the journey was in a small plane from Chicago to Urbana. Very loud noise due to propeller. I could not hear anything when I landed in Urbana.
When I landed in Urbana airport I had a surprise. I wrote to YMCA at University of Illinois about my trip and joining University of Illinois. Somehow some at the local Indian Students association found out and about 10 students came to receive me at the airport. Not only they received me but also took me to someone’s apartment which is in a basement. They cooked Indian Food and fed me South Indian Food. This was after not eating for about 3 or 4 days, since I started in Bombay. I thought that I was in Heaven!!
While I was in Kakinada before leaving India, someone came to Star and Co, my uncle’s printing press for printing farewell to one of his nephews who was also going to University of Illinois, Urbana. He introduced me to his nephew. That person came to me and said that he was going by Ship and that he will find us an apartment and that we both can share.
He found a small apartment, across from U of I’s Civil Engineering Hall within walking distance. The apartment he found was mainly occupied by students from India. It is on the second floor with a laundry on the first floor.
The apartment used to Very hot during snow season with steam blowing from laundry. Unclean bath rooms, I did not know how to cook and it was an adventure even to cook rice. The first time, I cooked rice, it was partially cooked one side!. I moved to a new apartment with Iyengar and another person during second semester.
We did not get along very well. Used milk bottles were not rinsed and piled up in on corner. Finally we threw out all the empty bottles in garbage.
Then I moved again for the third semester. This time to a very nice apartment with two people from Mysore. The duties in apartment was systematized. One person cooks one day, another person cleans one day, and another person sets the table. Terrible!
All three of us used to sleep in one large bedroom. One of the roommates used to get up early around 5 am, put the ceiling lights on and go to bathroom. When I asked him to turn the lights off - he said I won’t do it! That was the end.
Then I moved again to an old apartment across Green Street with a person Raja Ratnam from Ceylon. Raj was a civil servant from Ceylon and his wife was a Ph.D., student at U of I. We got along very well and he knows on how to cook food and he used to cook food for both of us. That was the end of CV’s cooking at Illinois.
He registered for one course in Philosophy Department where he used to them. He did not have much money. He used to fool around with lot of girls and used to sit across dining table with girls. I and other graduate students from Civil Engineering Department used to go Student Union for a cup of coffee. He used to come around and ask ‘CV- give me a buck’. My colleagues used to ask me who is this guy asking me for money and I told them that we share an apartment. Coffee at that time was $0.05 five cents a cup!
No one has cars except very few. One was student from Belo Horizonte, Brazil. He had a large Chevy with folding top. I also knew two faculty persons from India. One has a European wife and anther one is Dr. GGK Murti with Indian wife and children. They both had cars. Dr. GGK Murti sponsored his nephew from India to work in his Microbiology Lab as three quarter time Research Assistant.
His wife and Children left for India and he was alone. His nephew Josyula was my roommate in Illinois after Raj left to Canada to be with his wife.
The routine in Illinois was go to classes, do research using Computer ILLIAC, sleep, get up and eat Grilled Cheese and coffee for lunch, eat dinner mostly Pizza and Beer.
This is the foundation for my first heart attack which I had in 1994.

At that time in 1957, Dr. N.M. Newmark was appointed as ‘Head’ of the Department of Civil Engineering Post Graduate Studies. He was a great man with a Ph.D., and with many great ideas. He was also the Chairman of University of Illinois Committee on Digital Computers. Computers were in the Mathematics Department at that time. CVC took a graduate course in Math Department of University of Illinois on Computer Programming for ILLIAC. The name of ILLIAC was mentioned in Movie - 2001 a Space Odyssey - as the fore father of HAL the world famous imaginary computer in ‘2001’ aiding humans on Space Travel.
I was one of the few programmers who developed large scale computer programs at University of Illinois 1957-1962. After CVC left University of Illinois that computer program ‘Elastic and Inelastic Response of Single and Multi- degree of Freedom Systems for Simple and Earthquake Motions’ was used by many other researchers. They have used that Computer Program until ILLIAC was phased out for ILLIAC IV.
