About Integrative Holistic Medicine (IHM)

Integrative Holistic Medicine (IHM) combines diagnostic tests and treatments from both Conventional/Allopathic Medicine and Complementary/Alternative Medicine (CAM).

CAM therapies are increasingly being utilized by the public (in some studies as much as 75% of the public on a regular basis), and many are afraid to tell their doctors.

Integrative Medicine is a formally recognized specialty in the USA, with several prominent medical schools providing research fellowships, residencies, and patient care centres:

Canada unfortunately provides little support to doctors with interest in Integrative Medicine. Physicians wishing to pursue a peer reviewed exam or formal certification must do so in the USA (via the ABIHM previously ,and now the ABPS). In Ontario, an OHIP visit only covers care provided through the lens of conventional medicine as taught in a medical school curriculum.

Where do I fit in?

I completed the previous version of the US board exam in 2013. I aim to provide a responsible balance of care, ensuring first that acute and serious medical conditions are managed by the conventional medicine approach. I practice conventional medicine most of my day, the volume and pattern recognition facilitates decision making about whether a strictly conventional or IHM approach best suits the patient. Integrative-holistic techniques are best applied to chronic diseases that have failed the conventional approaches, especially conditions labeled or classified as a \"wastebasket diagnosis\".

* OHIP consultations may be required before or after IHM consults per the Ontario College of Physicians policy on Complementary/Alternative Medicine. The OHIP visit ensures the case has been fully explored from a conventional medicine framework and that contrast is provided into \"what most doctors would advise\" vs. the IHM recommendation. In some cases labwork (such as kidney/liver function tests or a specialist referral ) would also be ordered under OHIP to monitor for safety.

What is a wastebasket diagnosis?
A diagnosis given to a constellation of symptoms that have no physical origin or supporting evidence through diagnostic tests. I have contributed to this wiki on the topic. Patients who receive a diagnosis of wastebasket diagnosis often feel dismissed, are given a handout as the only treatment, and many times are left with the impression nothing more can be done.
