We personally go ahead and support their backs using a homemade sling, a back brace by \"Lil Back Bracer\" with a belly band for male/female that holds&nbsp;a disposable handwarmer placed in the area of injury on their back&nbsp;when taking outside. We then test&nbsp;them to see if they can&nbsp;pee/poop on their own using either a sling we ordered off Amazon or a thin flat single bed size sheet. You may also want to consider going to a Vet Chiropractor Holistic Clinic and set up regular visits (every 3-4 months) for adjustments,etc. The first steps if your dog shows paralysis of his/her back legs, is to get them to a crate and take them to a vet as soon as you can. Check for deep pain sensation (doing the pinch test) and taking them outside on a sling to see if they'll pee/poop for you. These are all good signs before heading to your vet that your dog will most likely be a great candidate for crate rest for 8 weeks along with pain medication. Though we've never crate rested one that cannot pee/poop on their own&nbsp;as we've chosen surgery in this case but I've heard of some owners who have learned to express their dog's bladder after unsuccessful surgeries or crate rest only. The surgeon will examine the extent of your dog's injury and will honestly tell you their chances of a good recovery or not.&nbsp;We've done more crate rest with recovery than surgery fortunately but sadly, we have lost two of our precious dachshunds...one at age four and the other 14 to IVDD. Much research has been done on IVDD and still is.
