Chad and I started with our first setter in 1995. Our very first setter was a small field bred setter named Spencer. He was a good dog and he was a good hunter. I can recall how he was a big runner.....After a few years we came upon an ad in the paper that was selling English Setter pups......sure enough before long we were bringing home another setter.....It didn’t take to long for us to figure out this setter was different than Spencer. He was quite calm and didn’t run nonstop in the back yard. By this time, I am now learning the different types of setters that are out there……We were so much in love with this dog we got another. Little did we know this was just the beginning of the passion we have for these dogs. Little by little…as the years went by these dogs and hunting was becoming a huge part of our lives. Still a lot of learning of the breed was taking place but we knew what direction we wanted to go, and we also knew it would be a long and tough road. Right from the beginning we were very selective……Dogs would come and go and many times we thought we wouldn’t achieve our goals as it was difficult finding breeders that would work with us or getting dogs that had the hunting abilities we wanted.
The bottom is where we started, and we were determined enough to look for better things ahead. We had a litter here and there. Selling them for very little……I can remember my mother saying “You’re having another litter! Remember how hard it was for your last litter!” I think it was the confidence of knowing we had something special that drove us to become better. I knew deep down I was good at what I was doing, and I had so much faith/love in my dogs and the puppies.
I always made sure we stayed connected with all the pups/families to know how each one was doing……. Feedback was extremely important and it still is today……We were learning each dogs’ abilities, qualities and temperaments that we liked and disliked. We starting to fine tune what we wanted in the ideal dog and moving past what we didn’t want. We began meeting people through our dogs, we were inviting people to hunt with us……we were making some great friends. The phone was ringing and the emails were coming in. Doors were opening we never dreamed would. We were becoming known.
None of this happened over night it took years and years of hard work. Many times, along the way we were turned down by breeders or bad mouthed by other breeders that didn’t even know us.
Still to this day there are groups of breeders that think its ok to be mean or disrespectful to fellow breeders......whether they think of other breeders as competition or are jealous, one doesn’t know how they think. We all have different ideas and goals……we all breed different types of setters.
We didn’t allow the negative to stop us….we knew we had something special and in time others would start to see this as well. I do believe things happen for a reason……and we cross paths with people that will either become friends, help us or teach us what not to do or what road not to travel. I still can remember a friend/mentor of mine telling me to keep doing what your doing and dont change a thing.
We all have choices……good or bad we all must live with our actions and the choices we have made. By 2010 we started building a fan base and began having several repeat buyers. By this time we already had several super stars in our kennel……Our litters were booked before they were born. It was then when we knew what we had worked for was finally falling into place. Beirl’s English Setters was here to stay!
There are many English Setter type breeders out there....each and every one of them have some type of goals in what they are doing. Everyone is different.....that’s what separates each breeder. There is no good, bad or better. We all focus on what we believe is your ideal dog. There are different types of English Setters.....we raise the Ryman type setters and our dogs hunt! There are also field bred Setters, Llewellin’s and Show.
With a very small percentage of breeders that actually focus on just hunting dogs. We focus on our dogs being exceptional hunters…….and expect nothing less then superb…..and at the end of the day, when at home..... they are a well behaved loving family dogs.
Our focus is to raise a beautiful, good natured dog with a loving personality that are outstanding around children. One that possess exceptional bird finding and handling abilities. They are intelligent, have all-natural abilities of honoring/backing another and natural retrieving skills. Our goal is to have superb, healthy, well rounded hunting dogs and to sell quality pups that require little training for the average hunter.
We believe that these qualities must be present and proven in our dogs before producing any offspring. By these high standards that we have..... our results in our offspring has been exceptional. We do believe that in order to produce exceptional pups that will hunt……the hunting abilities also need to be present in the pedigree of the parents and grandparents. In other words……they must hunt!
That said…..we also believe a man’s dog is only as good as the effort and time spent on the dog. We can sell a puppy with all the abilities bred into it to be one fine gentlemen’s hunting companion.
Each pup is different and how it behaves and is disciplined and how it hunts is solely up to its owner…..
October of 2017 we decided since we had a growing family of dogs we need to find somewhere better to raise them.....So we moved out into the country into a beautiful ranch style house in the woods with 40 acres of land. We had to rebuild everything from the ground up for our gang. We now have a new kennel for our dogs. Its big enough and has all the comforts our dogs need and deserve. We also built a puppy house just for our beautiful babies. Just big enough to house our puppies and their momma's.
Our puppy family has also grown throughout the past years and it has been wonderful watching each one grow into beautiful Setters. Thanks to all the owners that send pictures of their dogs for the website.
