to the Spring Feasts
of the Lord
Part 1
As we enter into one of the four seasons on our Gregorian Calendar, and we enter into the season that we call spring, I am reminded about how far the Church has strayed from the Biblical calendar and what the biblical significance of the season is. The seasons of the Lord are the Biblical Feast days that the Lord spoke to Moses about in Leviticus, Chapter 23. These feasts take place in the spring and the fall of each year. The Hebrew word for \"feast\" is Moed, which means a stated or appointed time. The precise date for each feast was given to Moses to give to the Hebrew people. They were instructed to meet with God on these appointed feast days once they entered the land that the Lord God was going to hand over to them, that is, Canaan. The Lord went on to say that these seasons, or more precisely, these appointed days, were to be a “holy convocation.” This holy convocation can be better understood as a dress rehearsal.1 For each dress rehearsal or feast day, the Lord gave a specific and precise day on the biblical calendar to meet with Him, and instructions on exactly what was to take place at that time. These dress rehearsals were intended to point to the coming of the Messiah. These festivals were joyous occasions with much celebration. The Spring feasts were a dress rehearsal that pictured Yeshua’s (Jesus’) first coming, and the Fall feasts are a dress rehearsal that picture His second coming. (Please note that Yeshua is Jesus’ Hebrew name, and I will be using it interchangeably with Jesus)
The dates that the Lord gave us for the Spring feasts or festivals are, the 14th day of the 1st month, which is Pesach or Passover, beginning on the fifteenth day of the 1st month and lasting seven days is The Feast of Unleavened Bread, the day after the Sabbath is The Festival of First Fruits and then Pentecost is to follow after exactly 50 days. These are the days that the Lord sent out an invitation for his people to meet with him in the spring of the year. Nisan is the 1st month on the biblical calendar and the 4th month on the civil calendar.
This festival was the day of his resurrection, three days after Passover began. Then on the Feast of Weeks, or Shavuot, better known to us as Pentecost. He poured out his Holy Spirit upon the believers in the upper room. He fulfilled every spring feast on the exact day that the Lord had instructed for the rehearsals to take place annually. Therefore, we can hope that, likewise, he will do the same on His second coming during the fall feast days. We cannot know the year, but scripture does tell us that we can know the season, that is, the appointed time.
The word says that these spring and fall feasts or appointments with God are to be a statute forever in all your dwellings throughout your generations. 2 This then brings me back to how I began this article. How sad it is that we in the Church, who have been grafted into the Olive tree, for the most part, have lost sight of the importance that God places on His feast days, and we are not familiar with the biblical calendar and the significance of these dates either. His invitation to meet with Him on these appointed dates is still extended to each one of us. Let your RSVP tell Him that you will be there! In the study that follows, we will be looking at each appointed time during the spring and how our Lord Yeshua fulfilled each feast so precisely. It is simply awesome how every detail points to and is fulfilled in Yeshua (Jesus).
Our study about the Spring Feasts of the Lord brings with it the importance of these appointments with God because we will see how Yeshua fulfilled each and every feast on the precise date. We will also be looking at each symbolic act required and how it was a picture that was painted for the Jews to prepare them for the coming of the Messiah. For us Christians, there is such hope embedded in the precision of the fulfillment of the spring feasts that we can look with assurance that when our Messiah comes the second time, He will fulfill the fall feasts with the same awesome precision. The celebration of these feasts, as I said earlier, were dress rehearsal for the real thing, i.e. the first and second coming of the Messiah.
Yeshua (Jesus) fulfilled the spring festivals by becoming our sacrificial lamb on Pesach (Passover), the believer’s bread on The Feast of Unleavened Bread, the first fruits among many, on The Festival of First Fruits, (Resurrection day).

Spring House Cleaning
Part 2
It is the preparation for the feast of unleavened bread that we are going to cover first because the preparation for it began before Passover. Because there was to be no leaven in any of the dwellings, a complete house cleaning took place during the week prior to the holiday. Every nook and cranny was swept clean. The entire house had to be spotless; no leaven was to be found anywhere. This custom of cleaning the house from top to bottom before Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread is where “spring housecleaning” originated.
It was customary that when the house was considered to be free of all leaven, the children were to make an inspection to see if they could find any leaven anywhere. Now it was a tradition to hide a little leaven under the cupboard for the children to find.

The linen cloth with its leaven and wooden spoon would be taken outside and thrown into a community bonfire. This was done year after year until its fulfillment in Yeshua, our Messiah.
When Israel was in rebellion, the appointed feasts were neglected. However, during the years of Jesus' earthly ministry, Israel kept the feasts of the Lord. This Feast of Unleavened Bread represents Yeshua the Bread of Life, who, though He had no sin, became sin for us on the cross of Calvary. The artist of our souls was painting a picture for us. Let’s take a deeper look at the artistry that is contained in this painting.
If we look deeper, we will see that the lamp that is lighted is the word of God, which is a lamp to our feet and lights our path, exposing our sin. The leaven or sin that is exposed by the light is swept by a feather onto a wooden spoon. He has promised to cover us with His feathers and that we can find trust under His wings. We are also told that when the Messiah comes, there will be healing in His wings. The feathers of a dove represent the Holy Spirit, who sweeps our sin away. The wooden spoon is made from a tree, as well as the execution stake known as the cross of Calvary, and set outside the city. It was the place where our sin was swept away. When Yeshua was taken down from the cross, He was wrapped in a linen cloth and taken to the tomb. The communal fire that was outside consumed the linen, the leaven, and the wooden spoon of every family in that community. It represented the sacrifice of the Lamb and that the fire of God or His judgment was upon the Lamb so that mankind would not experience the fire when they accepted the Messiah as their sacrificial Lamb.
Well, Jesus did a little housecleaning Himself just before Passover and The Feast of Unleavened Bread. The search for leaven began in His Father’s house. While the Jews were sweeping their houses clean, Jesus went into the temple courts and, with His whip, He began to sweep the house of His Father clean. Scripture tells us this: Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. And He found in the temple those who sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the money changers doing business. When He had made a whip of cords, He drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and the oxen, and poured out the changers' money and overturned the tables. And He said to those who sold doves, \"Take these things away! Do not make My Father's house a house of merchandise!\" As we travel with Jesus through this Passover season, we will see many more of the ways in which He was the fulfillment of these spring feasts.5
Perhaps it might be wise if each of us considers doing a little spring cleaning ourselves. Since the day of Pentecost, the body of the Messiah has become the temple where His Spirit dwells. Scripture tells us: Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? If anyone defiles the temple of God, God will destroy him. For the temple of God is holy, in which temple you are.6 During this season of remembrance, let each of us examine our temple and sweep the house of God clean. Let’s be sure that no leaven can be found there.
My Father in Heaven, it is the blood sacrifice of your son Yeshua (Jesus) that washes my sin away. Thank you that you sent your Son to take the punishment for my sin so that I might be reconciled to you. Thank you that on the cross, Yeshua took my every sin, past, present, and future, and they were nailed to the tree. Thank you that forgiveness is mine just for the asking, that there is nothing that I can do to earn forgiveness and your salvation, because it is a free gift. I accepted this gift that you have given me of salvation because Yeshua paid the price that I could not pay. I thank you that it is His shed blood that washes my sin away and keeps me clean day by day. Examine this temple of yours that is my heart, and if you find any leaven there, sweep it away so that your home remains undefiled and a place where your Holy Spirit dwells. Amen

Yeshua's Time in Bethany
Part 3
Now it was six days before Passover, making it the 8th day of Nisan, and we find Yeshua (Jesus) in Bethany, which is about two miles east of Jerusalem. From the other Gospels, we learn that he went from Ephraim beyond the Jordan and came back through Jericho with the great company of Galileans who came to attend the Passover. 7 Bethany was the home of Mary, Martha, and Lazarus, their brother. This is where the miracle of raising Lazarus from the dead took place. Lazarus had been dead for four days when Jesus called him forth from the grave.
Some scholars say that Jesus waited until the 4th day for this miracle because the Jews believed that the spirit of the man left the body on the third day, and that waiting until the fourth day made it much more of a miracle. Let me suggest that every miracle that Yeshua did had a spiritual implication, and that when we dig a little deeper, we see some hints that are contained in the pictures that the Lord paints for us. This may be one of those places that we find “sweet manna hidden in plain sight.” Every letter of the Hebrew alphabet has a corresponding number, and the letter itself paints a picture of something.
The 4th letter in the Hebrew alphabet is called the dalet and the picture that it paints is that of a door.

This miracle of Lazarus’ resurrection caused a great many people to believe that He Yeshua (Jesus) was the Messiah. It also set the stage for those who witnessed Lazarus’ resurrection to have the faith that would be needed to believe that Yeshua was indeed raised from the dead Himself. For it would be in just a few days hence when the news of His resurrection would travel from household to household.
The following day, there was a supper at Bethany. This was on Nisan 9/10 of the Saturday evening before he was to be crucified.8 These dates are very important to take note of, and we must remember that the beginning of a new day starts in the evening. Therefore, this supper took place on the day of the 9th, but that evening would begin the 10th day of Nisan, which is the first month on the biblical calendar. Many people were gathered for this supper because they had heard that Lazarus was alive, and they came to see for themselves that he had been raised from the dead. It was at this supper that Mary anointed Yeshua with her precious oil for His burial.

The Lamb of God Enters the East Gate - Part 4
On the next day, which is still the 10th of the first month until evening, is the day that Yeshua rode into Jerusalem on a donkey.
This crowd recognized Him as Messiah for many reasons, one of them was because of the miracle of raising Lazarus.
Now, let me set for you the prophetic scene of the day. During the time of Jesus' ministry, the Jews had been obeying the commandment of the Lord. They would take a male lamb without blemish on the 10th day of the first month. One lamb was expected to feed 10 people. Each household would take a lamb, and if it was a small household, then the lamb would be shared with another small household. They were to take the lamb on the 10th and inspect it to be sure that it was perfect and without blemish. They were to hold the lamb for 4 days. 9 Holding the lamb for 4 days brings us to the 14th of Nisan, which would be Passover. If one day is as a thousand with the Lord, then we can see that from the first Passover in Egypt until the Messiah was 4 days or 4,000 years. God required that they hold their Passover lamb for 4 days because He was holding our Passover Lamb for 4,000 years. Just as a little side note here, remember that the number 4 represents a door. Yeshua Himself said that He was the door. A lamb for every household signifies that salvation is for every household. The Lord keeps painting the same picture for us over and over again.
The population of Jerusalem at this time, according to Josephus, the historian who lived during the time of the Messiah, was 600,000. It is estimated that two and a half million Jews were in Jerusalem for Passover. Based on 10 people for each lamb, this would mean that approximately 250,000 lambs would have been sacrificed at Passover. On this day, the tenth of Nisan, these male lambs that were less than a year old were being gathered for inspection, to be sure that they were without blemish of any kind.
Now picture this, as Yeshua was entering at the East Gate on the 10th of Nisan, at the very same time the priests were gathering the lambs for inspection at the North Gate which is the sheep gate.

Yeshua rode into the city, the crowds began to praise Him and sing to Him. In the temple, they were singing too. They were all singing the same song of praise. During the temple services on this day, the song that would have been sung was a song that had been sung on this 10th day of Nisan since it was penned by David. 10. The entire song is about Yeshua. Remember what we learned earlier about a holy convocation being a dress rehearsal for the real thing. The priests and people inside the temple were still rehearsing while the people outside at the east gate were praising their Messiah, singing the song to Him, and experiencing the real drama of the day.
As Yeshua entered Jerusalem by the East Gate, those who recognized Him to be the Messiah began to praise Him and sing to Him. Inside the temple, the same song was being sung. Let’s take a look at the song, it is Psalm 118. For the purposes of this study, we will just examine a portion of it, starting in verse 19.
19 Open to me the gates of righteousness; I will go through them, And I will praise the LORD. 20 This is the gate of the LORD, Through which the righteous shall enter. 21 I will praise You, For You have answered me, And have become my salvation. 22 The stone which the builders rejected Has become the chief cornerstone. 23 This was the LORD'S doing; It is marvelous in our eyes. 24 This is the day the LORD has made; We will rejoice and be glad in it. 25 Save now, I pray, O LORD; O LORD, I pray, send now prosperity. 26 Blessed is he who comes in the name of the LORD! We have blessed you from the house of the LORD. 27 God is the LORD, And He has given us light; Bind the sacrifice with cords to the horns of the altar.
The first thing that I want to point out is that three times, as they were singing, they were singing His name. Salvation is mentioned three times in this Psalm, and in Hebrew, the word for salvation is Yeshua. First, in verse 14, they sang “The LORD is my strength and song, And He has become my Yeshua”. Then, in the next verse, they continued and sang, \"The voice of rejoicing and Yeshua is in the tents of the righteous.\" Then, the final time they mention Him by name is in verse 21: \"I will praise You, for You have answered me, and have become my Yeshua.\"
Then, as we drop to verses 25 and 26, we see the very same words that He was greeted with as He entered the city on a donkey. In the temple, they were singing this hymn at the very same time that it was being sung to Yeshua as he entered the East Gate. As Yeshua entered by the East Gate, they would have been singing, \"Open to me the gates of righteousness\"… and the rest of the Psalm mentioning His name three times and recognizing that He was the embodiment of this Psalm.
Yeshua (Jesus) rode into the city on a donkey, fulfilling the scripture in Zechariah 9:9 that was quoted in John that says: Then Jesus, when He had found a young donkey, sat on it; as it is written: \"Fear not, daughter of Zion; Behold, your King is coming, Sitting on a donkey's colt.\" This prophecy in Zechariah was written some 400 years before it was fulfilled on the day of Yeshua’s triumphal entry. Something very interesting to me is that Mary, while she was carrying her son, rode on a donkey to Bethlehem. So then our Savior came riding on a donkey shortly before His birth and shortly before His death. This beast of burden carried Yeshua, the supreme burden-bearer, into Jerusalem just 4 days before the door would open for Yeshua to carry the heavy burden of the sins of the world. (Please take note again of the 4 that represents Yeshua (Jesus), the door.

tells us that on the day of Yeshua’s triumphal entry, Yeshua went into the temple and looked around at all things, and because the hour was late, He left with the twelve and went to Bethany. It was the following day that, being hungry and finding no fruit on the fig tree, He cursed it.
Then that same day, Yeshua and his disciples returned to the temple. This was the day that Yeshua was cleaning His Father’s house from the leaven by driving the money changers out of the temple courts. Some say that Yeshua attended 4 Passovers during His ministry, and it was at the first Passover when He overturned the tables11 and drove the leaven out of His Father’s house. Mark’s account seems to indicate differently.
Mark 11: 17 (NKJV) And Jesus went into Jerusalem and into the temple. So when He had looked around at all things, as the hour was already late, He went out to Bethany with the twelve. 12 Now the next day, when they had come out from Bethany, He was hungry. 13 And seeing from afar a fig tree having leaves, He went to see if perhaps He would find something on it. When He came to it, He found nothing but leaves, for it was not the season for figs. 14 In response Jesus said to it, \"Let no one eat fruit from you ever again.\" And His disciples heard it. 15 So they came to Jerusalem. Then Jesus went into the temple and began to drive out those who bought and sold in the temple, and overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who sold doves.
Beginning on the 10th day of Nisan, the priests begin the inspection of the lambs for Passover. They must be examined and found with no fault or blemish of any kind. As we take a closer look at the gospels, we see that the Lamb of God was also being inspected at this time. While the priests were examining the lambs to be sure that they were without spot or blemish, the Pharisees tried to trip Yeshua up and find fault in His words, but they could not. 12 Likewise, the chief priests and the elders tried to find some kind of false witness against Yeshua, but they found none. Even though many false witnesses came forward, they could find nothing false in Him.13 Even upon the examination of Pilate and of Herod, the Lamb of God was found without defect. We read in Luke 23 the following account of the inspection of the Lamb of God. Even the examination of the Lamb was fulfilled as Jesus, our sacrificial lamb, was inspected by Pilate.A98EE0
Then Pilate, when he had called together the chief priests, the rulers, and the people, 14 said to them, \"You have brought this Man to me, as one who misleads the people. And indeed, having examined Him in your presence, I have found no fault in this Man concerning those things of which you accuse Him; 15 no, neither did Herod, for I sent you back to him; and indeed nothing deserving of death has been done by Him.

The First Passover
Part 6
Earlier we learned that the Hebrew word for feasts was the word Moed, or better understood as appointed times. The scriptures not only instruct us to meet with God at an appointed time, but they also instruct us that it is to be at an appointed place. God instructed His people to come to Jerusalem three times a year for the observance of these feasts.
Deut 16:16-17 (NKJV) Three times a year all your males shall appear before the LORD your God in the place which He chooses: at the Feast of Unleavened Bread, at the Feast of Weeks, and at the Feast of Tabernacles; and they shall not appear before the LORD empty-handed. 17 Every man shall give as he is able, according to the blessing of the LORD your God which He has given you.
There are seven feasts of the Lord, each of them are connected in some way to the three feasts mentioned in Deuteronomy. For this study, we are looking into the fulfillment of the Passover, of the Feast of Unleavened Bread, which is the second day of Passover, and the Feast of First Fruits. The Feast of Weeks and the Feast of Tabernacles will be covered at a later time.
God has proclaimed the Passover to be a permanent celebration for all of eternity.14 The Israelites celebrated their freedom from Egypt and should have rehearsed yearly until the final sacrifice that would be fulfilled in Yeshua, our Passover Lamb.
Today we celebrate its fulfillment by looking back to the cross where He freed us from our Egypt i.e. the world and where His blood sacrifice paid the price for sin once and for all.

think we are all familiar with the Exodus story where Moses led the Hebrews out of Egypt and parted the Red Sea as Pharaoh pursued them. If you are unfamiliar with the Exodus story, it can be found in Exodus, Chapters 5-14. Without getting into all the details of this story, there are a couple of things that I would like to point out because it speaks to us about the importance of the dates of these appointed times. The first Passover lamb in Egypt was slain on the 14th of Nisan, and the death angel struck all the firstborn sons of Egypt on that day. The final sacrificial Lamb, Yeshua, God's firstborn Son, was crucified on the 14th of Nisan, which was the Feast of Unleavened Bread.
It is interesting to note that as all the “firstborn” were being killed by the death angel on the 14th, the law that says, “What so ever you sow, you shall also reap,” was being fulfilled. According to the first chapter of Exodus, a previous Pharaoh had decreed that all Jewish baby boys be killed. We learn in the same chapter that baby Moses was hidden and, as providence would have it, was then raised by the daughter of the very same Pharaoh. Fast forward, and Moses is now is eye witness to the justice of God, as the reaping process takes place, as the final plague is executed upon the Egyptians, and their firstborn are killed.
The Hebrews left Egypt, a type of this world, by midnight, which would be the beginning of the 15th. They were told to leave Egypt, a type of this world, with unleavened bread. Our sinless Savior left this world and was in the sepulcher on the 15th of Nisan. On the 17th of Nisan, the Hebrews crossed the Red Sea, just three days after the slaying of the lamb on the 14th. On the 17th of Nisan was the resurrection of Yeshua, exactly 3 days after His crucifixion. The 17th of Nisan was the Feast of First Fruits.
Then exactly 50 days after crossing the Red Sea on the first Pentecost, God gave the Torah to Moses on Mount Sinai. How awesome it is, counting exactly 50 days from the resurrection, the Holy Spirit, in tongues of fire, was poured out upon the believers at Pentecost. This is why paying attention to the dates of the appointed times is so important.
