What Is a Red Room or Yellow Room? Understanding Their Significance

Completed in 1931, this unique and elaborately tiled space served as a reception room and banking hall for the Irving Trust and Bank Company.

The Red Room represents the work of architect. The Red Room was designed by artist Hildreth Meière, who was one of the most prominent muralists of her time. The Red Room was one of Meière's only abstract designs.

She created the space for Irving Trust Bank, which wanted to have "an inviting and friendly" reception area for clients, completed in 1931. The Red Room, a floor to ceiling mosaic room exists inside One Wall Street in Lower Manhattan, but has been closed off for decades. The Red Room received its name in the 1840s.

The room's small size and vivid color scheme has made it a favorite place for presidents and first ladies over the years. More than 100 years after Dolley Madison changed Washington social life, the Red Room became the site for more social change. From the iconic Oval Office to the exclusive White House Library, there is meaning behind every room's name, design, and (occasionally) the architecture itself.
