Thesnowshoehare(Lepus americanus) is a type ofharefound in North America. People also call it the varyinghareorsnowshoerabbit. It gets its name snowshoe because its large back feet work likesnowshoes.
These big feet stop it from sinking into deepsnow. Snowshoeharesusually weigh between 1.43 and 1.55 kg. Males are slightly smaller than females, as is typical for members of the rabbit family.

Like mosthares(and rabbits),snowshoeharesare prolific breeders. Females have two or three litters each year, which include from one to eight young per litter. Younghares, called leverets, require little care from their mothers and can survive on their own in a month or less.
