Step-by-Step Folding Picnic Table Bench Plans
Step 1: Cut the Lumber
Using your circular saw, cut the 2x4 lumber according to the following dimensions:
- Legs: 4 pieces at 16" long
- Supports: 4 pieces at 12" long
- Seat slats: 4 pieces at 48" long
For the 2x2 lumber, cut:
- Backrest supports: 2 pieces at 12" long
Step 2: Assemble the Legs
Using your drill and 2 1/2" outdoor wood screws, attach two of the 12" supports to the bottom of two of the 16" legs, creating an 'L' shape. Repeat with the remaining legs and supports.
Step 3: Attach the Seat Slats
Place the assembled legs on a flat surface, spacing them evenly apart. Lay the 48" seat slats across the supports, spacing them evenly apart. Secure the slats with 2 1/2" outdoor wood screws.
Step 4: Create the Folding Mechanism
Drill a 1/2" hole through the top of each leg, about 2" from the top. Insert a 1/2" x 2" carriage bolt through the holes, securing it with a washer and nut on the inside of each leg. This will allow the bench to fold.
Step 5: Attach the Backrest Supports
Attach the 2x2 backrest supports to the inside of the legs, about 12" from the top. These will support the backrest when the bench is in use.
Step 6: Add the Backrest
Cut four 1x6 boards at 18" long for the backrest. Attach them to the backrest supports using 2 1/2" outdoor wood screws, spacing them evenly apart.
