The Heywood Wakefield Gateleg Table, a timeless classic from the mid-20th century, continues to captivate furniture enthusiasts and interior designers alike. This iconic piece, produced by the Heywood-Wakefield Company, is renowned for its unique design, durability, and the warm, inviting atmosphere it brings to any space.

Understanding the Heywood Wakefield Company

Established in 1922, the Heywood-Wakefield Company was a prominent American furniture manufacturer, known for its innovative designs and high-quality craftsmanship. Based in Gardner, Massachusetts, the company produced a wide range of furniture, from dining tables and chairs to bedroom sets and occasional pieces. The Heywood Wakefield Gateleg Table is one of their most celebrated creations.

The Distinctive Design of the Gateleg Table

The Gateleg Table, introduced in the 1940s, is a testament to the company's commitment to functional and aesthetic design. Its most notable feature is the 'gateleg' mechanism, where the two leaves of the table fold down and rest against the main body when not in use, saving space. When unfolded, the table can comfortably seat six to eight people, making it an excellent choice for both small and large gatherings.

The table's design is characterized by its clean lines, simple yet elegant curves, and the use of high-quality materials like solid wood and plywood. The Gateleg Table typically comes in two sizes - the standard 36-inch width and the larger 42-inch width - both with a depth of 18 inches. The table's legs are often made of solid wood, with a subtle taper that adds to its visual appeal.

Why the Heywood Wakefield Gateleg Table Remains Popular

• Space-saving Design: The Gateleg Table's ability to fold down makes it an ideal choice for small apartments or homes where space is at a premium.
• Durability: Built to last, these tables have withstood the test of time. Many original Gateleg Tables are still in use today, a testament to their robust construction.
• Versatility: The Gateleg Table's neutral design makes it a versatile piece that can fit into a variety of interior styles, from mid-century modern to contemporary and everything in between.
• Cultural Significance: As a product of the mid-20th century, the Gateleg Table is a symbol of America's post-war prosperity and the emergence of the modernist design movement.

Caring for Your Heywood Wakefield Gateleg Table

To ensure your Gateleg Table remains in top condition, regular care is essential. Dust the table regularly with a soft, dry cloth. For more stubborn dirt, a slightly damp cloth can be used, but avoid excessive moisture. If your table has a finish, use a suitable polish to maintain its shine. If you notice any scratches or nicks, touch them up with a matching wood stain.
