Are you looking to upgrade your outdoor space with a sturdy, durable, and stylish picnic table? Look no further than the classic TREX picnic table plans. TREX, or Tenon and Groove, is a simple and effective joinery method that requires no nails, screws, or glue. This makes it an excellent choice for DIY enthusiasts and woodworking beginners alike. In this article, we'll guide you through the process of building a TREX picnic table, step by step.
Understanding TREX Joinery
Before we dive into the picnic table plans, let's briefly understand TREX joinery. TREX involves cutting tenons (protruding pieces) on one board and corresponding grooves (recessed areas) on another. When these are fitted together, they create a strong, interlocking joint. This method has been used for centuries in traditional woodworking and is perfect for outdoor furniture due to its durability and resistance to weathering.
Materials Needed
- 2x4 pressure-treated lumber (for the frame)
- 2x6 pressure-treated lumber (for the tabletop)
- 2.5-inch outdoor wood screws
- 2-inch outdoor wood screws
- Wood glue (optional, for added strength)
- Safety glasses
- Tape measure
- Pencil
- Circular saw
- Drill
- Jigsaw (optional, for decorative cuts)
TREX Picnic Table Plans: Step-by-Step
Step 1: Cut the Frame Pieces
Using your circular saw, cut the following pieces from your 2x4 lumber:

| Piece | Quantity | Length |
|---|---|---|
| Legs | 4 | 28 inches |
| Support beams | 4 | 54 inches |
| Braces | 4 | 16 inches |
Step 2: Assemble the Frame
Using your 2.5-inch screws, attach the support beams to the legs, creating a rectangular frame. Ensure the legs are on the inside of the frame. Then, attach the braces to the inside of the frame, about 12 inches from the bottom, to provide additional support.
Step 3: Cut the Tabletop Slats
Cut your 2x6 lumber into 10 slats, each 54 inches long. These will be the tabletop of your picnic table.
Step 4: Create the TREX Joints
Using your circular saw, cut a 1.5-inch deep groove into the top of each leg. Then, cut a 1.5-inch deep tenon on the ends of four of the tabletop slats. These will be the long sides of the tabletop. Ensure the tenons are 1.5 inches wide and 1.5 inches deep.

Step 5: Assemble the Tabletop
Fit the tenoned slats into the grooved legs to create the long sides of the tabletop. Then, lay the remaining six slats across the long sides, creating the short sides of the tabletop. You can use wood glue at this stage for added strength, but it's not strictly necessary with TREX joinery.
Step 6: Attach the Tabletop to the Frame
Using your 2-inch screws, attach the tabletop to the frame. Ensure the tabletop is flush with the top of the legs. You can use a jigsaw at this stage to cut decorative edges into the tabletop, if desired.
And there you have it! Your very own TREX picnic table, ready to withstand the elements and provide years of outdoor dining enjoyment. Happy building!
